how loud do you need to get?
and i can tell you right now that if you want a big loud amp that will sound good, and all you got is about $400, you'll be buying used gear.
you can pick up a 60w tube crate blue voodoo 2x12 combo or if you're lucky, maybe a 60w tube 5150 2x12 combo, both of those would get a good metal tone and produce quite a bit of volume, and i'm sure you could find either on ebay at a reasonable price.
if you want a bigger amp, like a half stack, in that price range.... you'll probably end up with a solid state setup. and in that case, i'd suggest going with a randall.

on the newest album, opeth used stock prs custom 24's and les pauls with duncans(i think duncans) but you know if you go to their website, www.opeth.com, they have on there the complete gear listing for each album, in the discography section

I am pretty sure they use EMG's in the LP's, well, from the photos in magazines i have seen it is EMG's they are using. but live last winter they used PRS 24's and Gibson LP's with EMG and Marshall JCM 800 full stacks, I couldnt get close enough to see if there were any pedals in front or to see about a rack.
