tuning
Somebody please tell me the names of the tunings!
I already put two tabs into the tab forum and now i am confused on tunings. I thought i was using EADGBE, but now some fuckers are confusing me. All i really need to know is what to put as the tuning when you are playing for example a song with power chords. I looked on the cradle of filth tabings for reference, since i am familiar with the guitar on their songs, but a lot of the tunings have different names even there. I hope my question is clear on what im asking.
I need to know soon cause im tired of that mithotyn tab i submitted sitting there with possibly a wrong tuning. and the summoning one

its a real pain. it helps to know how the band tunes before you start trying to figure it out. seems like so many death metal bands tune down to B. yes, normal tuning is eadgbe, but they like to tune down several steps to get a real low, mean sound. you can still generally find the notes they're playing, but chances are really good that you're going to do it up an octave, and, while the note names will be right, the tab won't have the same sound.

yeah, and i find the right notes. But the problem is whether or not they are playing in the same frets, or i could have mined tuned lower and just played a note right at (for ex) 7 when they are really using 8. It sucks. When i put the tuning on my mithotyn tab i just used the tuning the other guy used on the mithotyn tab: shadows of the past. I figured he would have it right. and since when i play the song with the notes he used, and its right, i figured it would be safe to say that is the tuning to use...

hmmmm... what kind of guitar tuner do you use??
I have a tuner in my rp200 and it's got all the tunings on there. Which really helps, cause most tuners don't have notes of: C and F.

Well, maybe thats one solution, but ive never owned a tuner...
I have solved my problem that started the thread though. I emailed the guy that tabbed King of the Distant Forest and asked him about the tuning. He said mithotyn tunes 1 whole step down, now i know, for sure, that my guitar has been at that. A tuner doesnt sound like a bad idea though. Thanks to everyone who gave any advice, i appreciate it

If you cant even tune your guitar maybe you shouldnt be worring about playing songs yet
Every band....and i mean EVERY band has different tunings.
useless punk and mainstream garbage is usually
EADGBE (standard tuning)
DADGBE (drop D)
and for heavy tunes, depending on the band, its usually tuned down to B, or even A

tunings vary from band to band, i usually stay on my tele: 1 step down, on my baritone:b-e-a-d-f#-b, and my 7-string: 1/2 step down

I tend to generally stick to "D" mainly since I am currently learning a plethora of songs from Death's 1998 masterpiece The Sound Of Perseverance.
When tuning to play I ussually pop in crystal mountains off of their Symbolic album (since it has alot of open notes that I can tune by ear to.).

I thought this thread died a long time ago!
Guitarenvy: I didnt say i couldnt tune, I said i wanted to know the names of the tuning. I re-read the first post on the thread and, I dont even think it made since. Or at least it didnt really say what i was thinking. I had my guitar tuned 1 whole step down. But when i started playing guitar, about a year ago, my friend always tuned to E. One day i went back to play something i used to play and it was wrong. I never remembered tuning it a step down so i thought it was still at E. Its not like its easy to know if it is at E or if it is a little lower just by plucking the string, unless your ears know it already... mine didnt.
But i do now know what the usual tunings are called and how they sound. Telling me not to worry about playing any songs yet? That would be like telling me to forget how to walk. I have only had about two instructions on playing guitar. That was from my friend when he taught me how to tune the strings to sound good when you play a chord, and how to play a chord. Other than that no one has ever taught me much of anything. And to play all the songs i have learned i just tuned the guitar to where it sounded like the song playing along with the tab i had printed. I just never new what the tuning was called due to all the tabbers with their different tuning preferences.
Alright, enough bullshit.
this thread should probably die now

To make things more complicated for you some bands tune to a different pitch... for example : Machine Head ; Burn My Eyes, this album the guitars are tuned to D,G,C,F,A,D (some songs C,G,C,F,A,D) but the standard pitch is "concert" which is 440 and on this album MH, tuned to a pitch of 430. So theres another factor for ya to look at, in fairness I dont know of many album that do that.

There are a few occasions where Dimebag has tuned his guitar slightly flat of what is written in the notation. I think Toni Iommi did it too. Other than being a bastard to play along to the CD to, it's not really worth worrying about though.
