Locking Nut System
Can someone explain to me exactly what this is, and if it can be removed if it is broken? I am thinking about buying a used BC Rich Stealth from a guy I know, and he says everything is fine, except it needs a new lock nut system. I'm not a big fan of micro tuners to begin with, so if it is possible to have it removed, then that is what I will do. I'd just like someone with a little more knowledge to advise me on my options here. Thank you.

Its just a metal nut with blocks that lock the strings down. There just screwed into the neck and can easily be removed or replaced. But if you want the trem to ever stay in tune id replace the nut, if you really dont care you can get graphite conversion ktis the can replace the nut. Heres a pic of a locking nut http://guitarpartsdepot.com/Merchan...001/GSLN1_t.jpg

On www.warmoth.com a locking nut goes for between $37 and $42, but it would probably be possible to get something cheaper on eBay. The actuall work of replacing the nut is something anyone who can tune a floyd should be able to do, so I'd say you could end up paying $30. Just a rough estimate though. If you need a shop to do it, I'd say double that, because they charge a lot for the work. But that's guesses, I've got no experience of shops, so I can't really tell.

I'll have to get a locking nut on my Ibanez ex series. Especially if I'm playing Mortician's stuff.

i just took the blocks off of my rg570's nut when i disabled the trem. the metal nut works just fine without the block peices. but if i wanted to, i could still put them back on.

You're crazy Patronized God.
I just bought an 84 Stealth for a great price about a couple of months ago. Depending on the Stealth (neck thru, bolt on, specs) anything less than $1500 CAN is a great deal. Buy the damn guitar. A few dollars here and there pale in the fact that you will own a killer axe.
Just be a cool canuck and get one, just like your cool Canadian cousin.
PS. My Stealth kicks ass.

They annoy the hell out of me when I'm doing bends behind the nut on my Celebrity. The string I'm bending will move around and make a clicking noise. I feared that I'd break a string, so I took them off.

Do you mean a bend on the first frame or on the other side?

Other side of the nut. Just use your right hand during a section that doesn't need to be picked.
