take a 6 string sweep, and since a 7string has a low b, take the notes from the high B and put they on the low B i think
---------------12h15p13p12---------------
-------------12-----------12-------------
-----------12---------------12-----------
---------14-------------------14---------
-------14-----------------------14-------
--12h15---------------------------15p12--
12--------------------------------------12
fot the below sweep i took the 11 on the highD string, and found that on the high Bstring (7), the placed that to the low B string, wich are ofcuz the same.
------------------------10-14-10---------------------
---------------------12-----------12------------------
------------------11----------------11---------------
---------------12---------------------12-------------
--------9--14----------------------------14-9--------
--7-10----------------------------------------10-7---
7--------------------------------------------------7--
this is just an idea, i made these(ahum) sweeops on a 6 string, but it cant be that hard, so just try finding the notes that are in the sweeps, but octaves lower etc, it should work

I wrote this tonight. Probably the first time I've ever done that....
It's just an a harmonic minor scale starting and ending with the 5th.

so ive been practicing my sweeps for probably a month now and i know a few from a couple different scales. the problem is i cant make each note stand out like i want them to. a lot of my sweeps blend the notes together. i might just need to keep practicing but are there any quick tips on making each note stand out?

I think palm muting takes away from the sound and makes it harder to sweep. Perhaps your problem is that your fingers aren't moving with your pick percisly enough.

Then go back up to the E-string using the same pattern. It's played at the same speed as if you were sweeping it (the notes must also be distinct like a sweep) with the taps effectivly taking the place of the pick striking the strings.
Anyway, I was wondering if anybody could give me an example of any guitarists who've used this technique or any more examples of it.

Yeah, I found playing just the pick hand, i.e. sweeping open strings (or mute with the left hand) to be a great remedy for bad co-ordination and 'sloppy' picking letting the sweep down.

Order of modes.
Ionian
Dorian
Phrygian
lydian
Mixolydian
Aeolian
Locrian
Each scale starts on the 2nd note of the previous scale. In any key, the pattern is always the same and this is important to know, it opens up alot of notes.
So in this attachment, its in A so we start in Aeolian, which is followed by Locrian and then Ionian, ect.
Reminder: Each note starts on the 2nd note on the low E of the previous scale!

Reading tab
Each number in a tab (tablature) indicates which fret to play. Imagine that the entire diagram of the 6 lines are 6 guitar strings. The top one is your high "e" string, the lowest the low "E" string. Each number on a "string"/line means to play the note produced at that fret on its respective string. Play the notes individually from left to right. If two strings have numbers on them stacked vertically, play them together as a chord. Examples:
e------------
B------------ Here, play open low E, then the second fret on E, then
G------------ the third fret on A. The notes are in order E, F#, C.
D------------
A-----3------
E-0-2--------
-0----------
-0---------- Here is a diagram of a major E chord, I assume you know the
-1---------- chord. Play an open e and B, first fret on G, second frets on D
-2---------- and A and open E all at once because the tab is all in one
-2---------- vertical line.

When you learn to sweep, what speed is classed as 'slow' for learning; i've realised my 'sweeping' is too sloppy and isn't getting anywhere, so im going back to basics- i don't know what speed i should be starting out with?

after you get the shape in your fingers a bit maybe set the metronome to 90 or something and do 8th notes.
what is classified as slow doesnt matter. Some argeppios are easier and others are hard as hell but as long as youre doing the arpeggio and it doesnt sound sloppy its fine.

Yeah you're right, just the speed where you can play it clean and work up from that. I really need to begin doing the same thing.
the first sweeps i learnt, I play fuckin fast but they can get sloppy as fuck

I've been working on sweeping quite abit these days, but one thing I don't understand is the proper technique for sweeping and tapping. Is there a certain way it should be done? Also does anyone have any good exercises for combining sweeping and tapping?

If you can find some videos, that really helped me. Definately some necrophagist because basically all of their solo's have sweeps with taps at the top.
Just start off practising slow, and practise a fluent motion of picking and moving toward the tap at the same time.
I noticed that sometimes if you are doing multiple sweeps with taps, that some people dont actually pick over the pickups, more over the end of the fretboard so theirs less distance to tap.

Here's a good example of a common sweep that Necrophagist use with some added taps (in red) on the high E:
Code:
------------13h17------13h17h20p17p13---------------------
----------15-----15--15--------------15----------------15-
--------14---------14------------------14------------14---
------15---------------------------------15--------15-----
-13h17-------------------------------------17p13h17-------
----------------------------------------------------------
-13h17h20p17p13h22p17p13h20p17p13-------------
---------------------------------15-----------
-----------------------------------14---------
-------------------------------------15-------
---------------------------------------17p13~-
----------------------------------------------
As mentioned by OpethFan, it's often useful to sweep over the bottom of the fretboard so as to minimise the distance that you have to move your finger in order to execute the tap. This is especially important if you tap with your pick (as I do).
Hope that helps.

Thanks alot for all the help, and the sweep.
Now I'm curious though is using the pick to tap actually easier, or does it just sound different than using your finger. Reason why is because I play classical guitar, and it is a menace to do any type of tapping with your finger. I've never tried it, and have heard of it even less. so I would like to know how to do it.

I find that if you use a pick, the tapped note is more defined and slightly louder.

I'm going to completely revise this thread sometime soon so its easier to understand. I made this pretty quickly about two years ago when I was younger (and I never really came back).
Mabye this will help: Each scale starts on the 2nd note of the previous scale. The order of the scales is always the same. The only thing that changes is the position of them which changes along with the key.
So in this attachment, its in Am so we start with Aeolian on the A on the big E. Locrian is the next scale (see the pictures to connect). If say you where composing a solo for a riff in F major, you would place Ionian on F on the big E string.
I use my middle finger to tap. The pick tap does tend to be a bit louder but with practice the finger seems to be just as good. Besides that the only reason I prefer the finger is because it causes a tad less effort and movement from the hand causing less loss of speed.

Thats a 7 string sweep i'm working on. If i wanted to add an extra high note at the top (16), would it be easier to slide to it with my tapping hand, or tap it with my pinky? or just transpose it up to give:
Code:
---------------------7h12t14p12p7---------------------
-------------------9--------------9-------------------
-----------------9------------------9-----------------
---------------9----------------------9---------------
------------11--------------------------11------------
---------12--------------------------------12---------
--5h9h12--------------------------------------12p9p5--
but then theres a nasty roll over 3 strings

Here's a quick question:
In Culinary Hyperversity (by Necrophagist), at this part ..
----------5--9--5------
--------7---------7-----
------6-------------6----
----7-----------------7--
--9--------------------9--
--------------------------
How exactly should I play this ? (with my picking hand..)
I've been practicing it for a few minutes but I can't sweep correctly so I downpick to the 5 then I alternate pick my way back up.. i'm faster at doing it than I was a few minutes ago but I feel like i'm not going to be able to play it as fast as he (Muhammed) does unless I change technique.. (Right now I can only play it at about 65% tempo)
And does anyone have a good Basic Sweeping exercise to recommend??

Ok Thanks for the link but what do you mean by "reverse what you are doing when picking down" ??

I mean sweep back up instead of alternative picking.

|
Yeah as it turns out it is alot easier using my finger, or maybe I just have practiced it to a point where it just feels like that.
also this is an awesome thread. can't wait to see what you do with it.

It'll be some time before I do, but I will eventually. I'd put videos up but I don't know how to hook up old video recorder to the computer. Mabye I'll put some audio up.

I would recommend getting over that habit. Sweep picking is different than economy picking.

Im just practicing small sweeps at the moment.
If i do a sweep like:
e-------6
B-----7-
G---8---
D-9-----
I up pick on the 9 and downstroke the rest. Anyway, in this simple sweep fingers come off the string comlpetley.
If I try a similar pattern downways my fingers do not completely come off the strings.
Is this a good or a bad habit? In a way my fingers stil stay on the string and dont allow ring. If i work at it will i get a nice sweep sound happening? Or what... Im new to Sweep Picking and Im learning the Open Face Surgery solo ... Is this a good choice to start of with. Im finding it pretty easy.
Anyway, someone comment on my technique. Sorry if i wasnt descriptive enough but basically my question is whether its ok to not completely take fingers off the string.
Thanks.

Pick and choose some stuff out of Cacophony's Concerto. Some of the stuff in there is great sweep practice.

The top one is definitely the diminished scale.

Here's a little practice thing I made up that might help people get faster with their playing, or simply warm up. It's played exactly how it's showed -- just start back at the beginning right after you end. Alternate back and forth between down and up strokes for picking (unless you want to try all down strokes, but that might slow it down a bit). Right now, my fastest speed is 210 BPMs. After that, I end up screwing up the third time around or so.
|-------------------------------------
|-------------------------------------
|-------------------------------------
|-------------------------------------
|-5-7-5------------------2-----------
|-------6-5-3-5-3-0-2-3----3-2-1-0--
I like to palm mute the whole thing, but it doesn't really matter.

That's a weak alternative picking technique. Make or find an exercise that utilizes more strings, more notes, and less notes concentrated on one string.

I know it's pretty simple, but I meant it to be more for beginners. One of the only guys I ever get to play around on guitar with really sucks, so I try to make stuff for him to get better with. Speed is the only thing that it would really be good for with more intermediate guitarists.

After hearing what you posted in the "post your riffs" thread.. it's pretty hard to believe you can actually play that.. but whatever..
EDIT: .. How FAST can you play it.. ??

I can play that... I began playing when i was in the 8th grade. I have graduated from highschool now. I took lessons for about three months, but after that I have been pretty much self taught.
And about the tabs... I find it boring when you have maybe 10 16th notes played open on the 6th (or 7th) string, with almost no changes, or dificulty. I like things to be mixed up, and constantly moving.
Again, I can play that... took me ages to type it tho; I am not too good with this whole tabbing thing
oh, and to your edit.. I have no clue how fast. I know its not the brightest thing, but I have never used a metronome.
**Edited**
Here is the scale in PowerTab. That is fairly close to what it is supposed to sound like. I will probably record my self noodling around, and load it up to the forum... I usually play it as a warm up. Play it at 90 BPM

Im not quite sure which fingers i should use in the godless endeavor solo, which way do you find better?
1. Pattern
Code:
p m i p r i p i r p i m p
---------------10-13p10-----------------
------------12-----------12-------------
------10h13----------------13p10--------
---12-----------------------------12----
14-----------------------------------14-
----------------------------------------
2. Pattern
Code:
p r i p r i p i r p i r p
---------------10-13p10-----------------
------------12-----------12-------------
------10h13----------------13p10--------
---12-----------------------------12----
14-----------------------------------14-
----------------------------------------
Its just about the finger used at the 12 fret.
I find the first Pattern a bit easier to play, but the second one pretends to be easier playing at a higher speed.

I didn't realize how anal every one on here is about every thing. Add examples of what I'm saying. I didn't even think of that. But even if I did think of it...I dont know how to put like guitarpro files or tabs on here. So if some one could help me out with that it would be cool.
Umm...I guess I didn't really think about my super sweeps thread too much. Seeing that Rusty Cooley Video made it obvious that people and super sweep. And I guess now that I think of it...I can to. Not to Rusty's extent. But I still got it. I suppose there are a lot of guys who can do that. Yngwie could, Micheal Angelo Batio definitly could, As Could Jason Becker, when he was able to. Them and more.
I guess you really do have to think about these threads before you type anything.

volvox - i use the first pattern because my middle finger naturally falls on the 10th fret of the G string. if you move that shape down the neck its tough to use your ring finger so i always stick to the first pattern

Right, as some of you may know,
I'm a REAL scales, modes and chords freak.
Completely meshuggah (no reference to the band).
And my career has been successful.
Especially in the scales and modes department.
This is a compilation of the stuff I've started
threads on in the Theory Forum. And just some
scale-y stuff. If you want the original theory
and stuff I found out about them, visit the
original threads.
http://metaltabs.com/forum/showthread.php?t=29670
http://metaltabs.com/forum/showthread.php?t=29384
http://metaltabs.com/forum/showthread.php?t=29133
If you deploy an Advanced Search for threads started
by me in the Theory Forum, you may find some other stuff
of interest to you.
Firstly,
mode charts for the four common minor chords!
Natural Minor - (A B C D E F G)
A Aeolian (Natural Minor)
B Locrian (Half-Diminished)
C Ionian (Natural Major)
D Dorian
E Phrygian
F Lydian
G Mixolydian
Harmonic Minor - (A B C D E F G#)
A Harmonic Minor
B Locrian #6
C Harmonic Major
D Spanish Phrygian
E Phrygian Dominant (Double Harmonic Major)
F Lydian #2
G# Diminished
Pentatonic Minor - (A C D E G)
A Chinese (Pentatonic Minor)
C Mongolian (Pentatonic Major)
D Egyptian
E ???
G ???
Melodic Minor - (A B C D E F# G#)
A Jazz Minor (Melodic Minor)
B Dorian b2
C Lydian Augmented
D Lydian Dominant
E Hindu (Hindustani)
F# Locrian #2
G# Super Locrian (Altered Wholetone)
Sorry about those two last penta' modes.
They are two I have not as yet come across.
Here are the symmetrical scales.
Built around the symmetrical chords
(Augmented and Diminished), they have cool,
almost 'swirling' feels, and produce
patterns on the fretboard which make them
easy to learn and improvise in, especially
on seven-string guitars.
Eight Tone Symmetrical
AKA Octatonic (Half-Whole)
AKA Arabian a).
AKA Auxilliary Diminished Blues
Code:
[----------------------------------------6-7-9-10~~]
[--------------------------------5-6-8-9-----------]
[------------------------3-4-6-7-------------------]
[----------------2-3-5-6---------------------------]
[--------1-2-4-5-----------------------------------]
[0-1-3-4-------------------------------------------]
A favourite of Karl Sanders from Nile.
Six Tone Symmetrical
(don't know any AKA's)
Code:
[------------------------------8--9~~]
[------------------------9--10-------]
[------------------9--10-------------]
[------------10-11-------------------]
[------11-12-------------------------]
[12-13-------------------------------]
Then there are Japanese scales,
which are highly melodic and from
them can be drawn HUGE melodies.
They have what I call 'stacked' intervals.
I'll do the Japanese a). on seven strings.
Code:
[------------------------0-1-5~]
[--------------------0-1-------]
[------------------2-----------]
[--------------2-3-------------]
[--------0-2-3-----------------]
[----0-1-----------------------]
[0-1---------------------------]
Then there the Southern Far Eastern scales,
some Vietnamese and Malaysian, such as
Kumoi and Pelog. Sound right odd.
[FORGOTTEN-THEM,-SORRY!--------]
Then there's the Persian scale. DAMN odd.
Starts quite Arabic then goes off on a blues
tangent.
Odd shaping as well.
Code:
[----------------------------0-1-4-5~]
[------------------------1-4---------]
[------------------1-2-3-------------]
[------------1-2-3-------------------]
[------0-1-3-------------------------]
[0-1-4-------------------------------]
Now, here's the daddy of oddness.
The Nonatonic scale, or Nine Tone scale.
Yes, NINE NOTES.
Code:
[------------------------------------0-2-3-4-6~]
[----------------------------0-1-2-4-----------]
[----------------------0-1-3-------------------]
[----------------1-2-4-------------------------]
[--------1-2-3-4-------------------------------]
[0-2-3-4---------------------------------------]
Now, the Promethean scale. Having no common chord
in it, it sounds melodically amorphous. Puzzling
listening.
Code:
[------------]
[------------]
[------------]
[----------0-]
[------1-4---]
[0-2-4-------]
Lydian Diminished!
A favourite of mine!
Has some nice, moody Diminished-style modes.
Code:
[----------------------------0-2-3-6~]
[----------------------0-2-4---------]
[------------------0-3---------------]
[------------1-2-4-------------------]
[------1-2-4-------------------------]
[0-2-3-------------------------------]
Let me present to you a scale that I have
never seen ANYWHERE ELSE and thus named
after myself:
THE MACDONALDIAN SCALE!
Code:
[----------------------------0-2-3-5~]
[----------------------1-2-4---------]
[------------------0-2---------------]
[------------1-2-4-------------------]
[------0-3-4-------------------------]
[0-2-3-------------------------------]
Has the most awesome modes.
Not named them as yet.
The mode starting on the 4th string
(3rd highest) starts like a pentatonic
(to be exact, the Egyptian penta' mode)
and vanishes into kind-of harmonic minor,
diminished-ness.
Hope it's all helpful.
As requested by John Mansley

i keep my pick slightly slanted because if i have to shred at the bottom or top of an arpeggio pattern its much easier to transition. if you really let your hand get into the motion of the sweep and you need to start picking right away it will be tough, so by not slanting my pick that much im prepared to connect the sweeps with licks.

i have a question on sweep and tap.Do you have to glide through the string with your fingers then tap or use your pick then tap?

Which is the 'better' way to play this sweep? Its from Fermented Offal Discharge (but played in standard E tuning), and I personally prefer the second way, because i don't like the hammer-on at the start of the first.
Code:
-------------12h17p12-------------
-----------13--------13-----------
---------14------------14---------
-------14----------------14-------
--12h15--------------------15p12--
----------------------------------
Code:
---------8h12t17p12p8---------
-------10------------10-------
------9----------------9------
----10------------------10----
--12----------------------12--
------------------------------
I prefer to tap the 17 in the second sweep, as i find it hard to do the 12/17 hammer-on in the first, but should i be trying to get that somewhat stretched hammer-on correct?

I prefer the first way as it reduces the need for extra movement in my picking hand. I've never had any trouble in hammering to the 17th fret from the 12th, though - have you got small fingers?
It'd be a good idea to just practise doing |-12h17p12h17p12-(ad infinitum)-| as it'll build up strength and accuracy in your pinky and help with suppleness.

I started writing a song called Ancient Grace about a month ago.
I based it in a jazz scale (A superlocrian, one of my favourite scales), and you should see some of the chords you can sweep!
Code:
|===3===||===3===|
D[---------8-----------]
A[------12----12-------]
F[---8-----------8-H12~]
C[10-------------------]
G[---------------------]
D[---------------------]
A[---------------------]
...or...
Code:
D[---------------------]
A[------12/13\12-------]
F[---8-----------8-H12~]
C[10-------------------]
G[---------------------]
D[---------------------]
A[---------------------]
A# minor (major 7th) I believe (the backbone chord of a melodic minor scale of the same root note).

Hey, i need to ask something. I got some sweeping exercises from my guitar teacher today, and I showed them to a friend of mine, who also plays guitar. He said; this isn't sweep, there are two notes on one string here! So if a lick goes like this;
------------7-9-7--------
--------7-9------9-7-----
------7--------------7----
--5-8-----------------5----
would that mean that it's not a sweep?

------------7-9-7--------
--------7-9------9-7-----
------7--------------7----
--5-8-----------------5----
you could use sweep picking so it is a sweep
better this way man:
------------7-h9-p7--------
--------7-h9------9-p7-----
------7--------------7----
--5-h8-----------------5----

Itīs intervals, 1 is the first note in the scale, 2 is the second and so on. If 1 is under C that means that itīs in the key of C, and then the 2 and 3 etc show the other notes in the scale
