Persian scale
Here's a new fav' of mine:
THE PERSIAN SCALE!!!

It's a really odd-shaped scale on the fretboard. It's much harder to learn than, say, Natural Minor and modes, Six Tone Symmetrical, Iwato and the other Japanese Pentatonics and even Jazz Minor and its modes.

If you place the root on your 3rd string though, I found there's a cool way to remember it.

[------6-7-9-------]
[5-6-9-------------]

[------------------]
Each 'cell' ends on the same fret before ascending onto a new string, in this case '9'. OK, it goes into the next octave of the scale, but its definitely a good way to remember and learn it.
And you'll notice it goes 5-6, then 6-7, then 7-8, before the 9's.
Just a funny little thing I noticed!

Well I've got one on the symmetrical scales just a bit down in this Forum.
I just love scales! I've learnt tons in my time!
I'm gonna edit the formula bit. It's looks a bit messy.

Yeah I'd say that this scale competes with Japenese Pentatonic as far as weird intervals.

And Japanese scales (like Japanese a. and it's modes), have what I perceive as 'stacked' intervals.
There's usually the same frets recurring on successive strings.
For example, the Iwato, third mode of Japanese a. or the 'K' scale. I'll do it on 7 strings to prove my point.

Aha yes I see what you mean. I've noticed that before, that the Japenese scale doesn't progress down the neck like most others do. Weird.

Yeah.
Another weirdo scale would be the Promethean scale. It has no feel to it, because there's no basic chord. Its what one might call 'melodically amorphous'. You can draw some really great stuff out of it though.

You can actually hear a bit of a stark melody when you ascend it at moderate speed. Although it's still quite to hear the story of a brave man who challenged the gods in it. |
