what kinda bass head to you guys suggest i have a vintage ampeg now but i want a new one this one is old and doesnt sound that great any suggestions?

you have an OLD vintage ampeg? why do you want something different? what kind of tone are you looking for?

ive got like 400 to spend i want a new one because its giving me really shitty tone its all distorted and like all the tubes have to be replaced. i just want like a really clean punchy bass tone

for 400 you can't buy shit, you're better of getting your Ampeg svt(?) fixed. tubes don't cost THAT much.

what kind of pickups are you using? the ampeg I played had a great tone.

I have a Hughes & Kettner bassbase 400 now which has a really transparent clear tone, also packs a lot of punch. but its way out of your price range I guess.

He can get hmm....... yeah get it repaired.. unless you want a Warlock platinum or a Rogue haha

or sell it, use the money you sold it for + that $400, and buy a good new head.

Get a loud amp. No matter what. You want yourself heard. Anything less than 200 watts will not do. (Unless you are in a gay party band of course, which I assume you are not). Period.

I own a Hartke HA3500 amp which is great for medium gigs. I use it to power small on stage cabinets that provide the sound on stage. This amp costs little and is good enough.

For bigger stages I use a 600watt Warwick amp. Loud and noiseless. Far better quality than the Hartke, but also much more expensive and heavy as hell. But with this and two 300watt cabinets, you leave any guitarist shitting his leather pants.

My advice to any metal player who does not care a lot about the sound quality would be the Hartke. If you want better quality, choose a SWR head or one from Warwick. Still fair priced and very decent.

Oh and get a head and a separate cabinet. Not a stupid combo.
