john petrucci's rock discipline..
i just downloaded that video, and i haven't even gone past 25 or so minutes, but has anybody else seen it? the warm up excersizes for his left hand are insane. i never knew how awful my reach was comparatively.. i almost smashed my guitar against the wall and gave up, thinking my hands just weren't meant to do that stuff. my friend has done a lot of those sort of things, though, and now he says that his fingers can spread out grotesquely.
just want to make sure im not the only one who thought even step 2 (spread the index away) of like 6 was rather difficult? lol

i don't have the video but i have the book/cd
do those stretches man, they help alot in loosening your fingers. my fingers feel really light and nice after doing those stretches, i'm gonna do em every day now.
recently, i put those stretches into powertab. It takes 15 mins to go thru all of them descending chromatically
don't fret man, after a while you're fingers will stretch, just be consistent. i couldn't stretch that much either, but after a while now, on good days i can do the very last stretch he shows (the one for the "crazy guitarists out there")

They take a little getting use to, but dont fret. Take your time and work on them everyday and eventually you'll get there.

excellent, thanks guys. yah i'll be doing them at least once or twice daily. i'm sure that it'll help me a lot, because even after doing them, my hand and fingers really feel stretched and worked out. that video has a ton of really helpful things on it.. i've been playing for over 8 years now, and it's taught me a lot in just an hour

hmm, he went through it fairly slowly. it was like this, but you can change the fret #s as long as you keep the same formations:
e--13--13--10--10----------------------------------------
b--12--11--11--12----13--13--10--10---------------------
g--11--12--12--11----12--11--11--12----13--13--10--10--
d--10--10--13--13----11--12--12--11----12--11--11--12--
a---------------------10--10--13--13----11--12--12--11--
E----------------------------------------10--10--13--13--
basically get the diagonal line kind of setup, switch the insides, switch the outsides, switch the insides again. then move down 1 string. after that, spread your index finger 1 fret back to stretch that:
e--13--13--9---9-----------------------------------------
b--12--11--11--12----13--13--9---9----------------------
g--11--12--12--11----12--11--11--12----13--13--9---9---
d--9---9---13--13----11--12--12--11----12--11--11--12--
a---------------------9---9---13--13----11--12--12--11--
E----------------------------------------9---9---13--13--
then follow the same pattern, but spread your pinky one away instead. then spread index and pinky away, and put a fret between your inside fingers to stretch them out more. follow the pattern.. eventually you'll have one fret inbetween each finger, which i can't do heh.
i suggest starting up at a pretty high fret.. around 12 or so, then moving the formation back down the neck to the wider frets, and you'll get a pretty gradual, methodical stretch. well worth it.. it seems to do my hand wonders.
