What is the point of the effects loop? I only find that it changes the sound of my delay pedal (making the distorted effect still echo when I switch to clean).

it's an alternate loop which has less interference (hiss/humm etc.) plus you can switch the whole loop on/off and change the volume of the fx loop.

that's the point of an fx loop.
