The most important theory which you must learn is probly
1)Most of the scales i.e major, minor and maybe some exotic ones
2)Intervals
3)Circle of Fifths
4)Modes
5)Chord Formation's
6)Harmonizing
Its all pretty simple to learn on your own, even easier with a guitar teacher.

If you can understand the circle of fifths then you pretty much know all the scales and key signatures. I'd say its the most important thing to understand. Oh and forming major triads.

One thing that IMO helps a lot when learning theory is the ability to read normal music notation, or at least understadning of the piano. So if you don't know any of that stuff, I'd suggest you at least have a look at it before you go into other parts of theory. But that's just my oppinion.

That's a little too much of an open ended question.......theory in general would consist of all of it. But I think you want to know the most important aspect of "theory." In that case, no, becasue you must learn it all, not just a peice of the puzzle.
