If I am in D Major, and the first chord is a B, the the key that you are in is the relative minor of D, which is B minor. If the first chord was a D, then yes, you are in D major. This is for traditional classical music though. This weird modern era we have today might start differently; oh say, this D major starting with a C, which wouldn't make much sense....traditionally....and there are rare exceptions...
and, you don't have to have a solo the exact same key the whole way through...you can change it...just make sure your rhythm guitarist knows what you're doing.
