Best Amp
Okay, so as we all know Christmas is coming up soon. I'm thinking of buying a new head; $1000 max. I currently have a Marshall AVT50 through an AVT slant cab. The sound I'm getting is too bassy with not enough controls. I really liked the controls on my MT-2 pedal and would like something that is versatile like it. Due to the fact that my head has been having some trouble, I don't think I'll go back to Marshalls and the sound doesn't seem to get me where I want to be. I like to play a lot of Anthrax, Master of Puppets style Metallica, metalcore, Dark Tranquillity (especially off the Projector album), At The Gates type of stuff. I'm looking at mainly Peaveys; 5150, 5150 II, and Triple XXX. I'm not sure how these'll sound through my AVT cab. Should I buy a 1960 cab instead? If not, which head will due me best (not limited to those heads)?

i think if you are going to buy a new head for under $1000 any of those peaveys would do great. or you could look into some used mesa's like the rectifiers or maybe an f-100.
another choice you may love or may hate is the crate blue voodoo, its not very versitile, but if your like me and you like the stuff it can do then its not going to be a bad choice. especially for the money.

yamaha? or yahama?
i'd suggest a 5150 II over a 5150, separate eq's for the clean and distortion channels, instead of getting great dist and only so so cleans. they're only like $50 more than the regular 5150s

Yes, the Savage fucking KILLS. I have one now and it rules.
The VHT UL's are great, as is the Bogner Ecstacy.
Those are pretty high-end amps, though, I wouldn't know anything cheaper.

Yeah, or the Rivera Knucklehead, H&K Triamp or Soldano SLO100...
but then we're talking a whoooole different price range.
for the hard dollars, ENGL is the best your money can buy.

However, the ENGL isn't exactly a cheap amp either.

True, but if you look at the price of a Marshall TSL and a Peavey XXL/5150 I think the price is justified if you look at it soundwise!

exactly, that amp wants to sound like a triple rect. but it doesn't...
I played about all peaveys and I just liked the XXL's sheer power, it's pretty brutal, packs more punch then a 5150 and it has it's own tone, which the xxx does not have (in my opinion)

My Uncle has the XXL. It sounds so nice and it is entirely too powerful. I love it

they have a high output, yes... and a typical high gainish sound.
that's why you PLAY the damn amps before you buy them
a lot of guys just walk into a store, play one amp and don't even bother to look at the others....
I spend hours in music stores before I bought my amps.. because I wanted to be sure I bought the right ones... I suggest you do the same if you're looking for 'your' amp..
