What exactly does "scooping the mids" mean in reagrds to the tone knobs on an amp.

It just means turning down the mids a lot, more specificly using like a 9-band eq and doing it. It gives you a very muddy, unclear tone. I hate it. It's horrible for anything like Black Metal, or things in the vein of Death.

yup, on 3 band eq, just turn down the mids knob all the way or almost all the way.

it sounds good, you get the Metallica, Pantera (CFH) type of sound.

it all depends on the amp or pedal you are using for distortion, i dont like to cut my mids completely out, but i put the mids at about 10 o' clock, so it gives that mean biting scooped sound, but its fuller and has good tone. with my amp it sound thin and weak with no mids but to blahish sounding for my taste with them up all/most the way.
