What kinda Black Metal do you guys like?
And I don't want any answers like "I don't like any black metal, thats gay" or anything!

Personally i enjoy Stuff like Opeth, Thy serpent and old dimmu the most, kinda slow and maybe with a bit gothic touch.
Though I also like some "harder" stuff like Impaled Nazarene, Barathrum and vintersemestre...

I don't like a lot of black metal, but I can stand Dimmu Borgir and Anorexia Nervosa.

I don't like any blackmetal, at all. that aside, I enjoy seeing it live and I don't have much against it. but I hate all those posergoths and ex-nu-metal kids listening to blackmetal and thinkin' they're badass.

i prefer to judge what i like of black metal on a song by song basis, as the general theme is i don't like black metal, however some of the songs i do like include

Immortal - Tyrants
Astriaal - Ode To Antiquity
Barathrum - I am verry possessed

oh and opeth i wouldnt class opeth as black, the closest (and strangest) that i have heared as classification is progressive death metal
but then again us australians have fucked classification (e.g. frankenbok classify themselves as taco metal)

It took me long time before i start appreciating black metal.
Personnaly i prefer death metal but almost all my friend are more into black metal
stuff so with the time i kinda grew up in me. I don't like much BM band

-immortal (especially blizzard beast and battle in the north)
-satyricon (but only one album so far "nemesis divina")
-mayhem (their latest stuff)
-enslaved (blodhemn)

I really dig dissection, they sure got BM influence but i don't think you can label them only as a blackmetal band.

My favorites are bands like Mayhem, Darkthorne and Burzum.
Satyricon is quite good... You can call them a light version of Darkthrone. At least their old stuff.

I like the Black metal raw and as un-produced as posible.

Is Opeth black metal?
I think it's more jazz/blues metal with a kind of a Death metal vocalist.

I like alot of nsbm, bands like abyssic hate, kristallnacht and pagan hellfire. I also like the raw, traditional stuff like abazagorath, krieg and such. but then again i also like alot of the newer melodic, well produced folk-bm.

GEHENNA is very good bm band IMO. "First Spell" -album is best from them. It uses rock 'n' roll styling music with raw vocals and great riffing.

Then other legendary band is ILDJARN. "Det Frysende Nordariket" is absolutly best album from this band. Uses very simplistic and RAW riffing, drum machine and ultra raw vocals. In the end it sounds like trance-beat but it's making the beat with drums and guitar. VERY UNIQUE. No synths or anything, just RAW BLACK METAL!

Someone introduced BURZUM here. It uses kind'a same methods as ILDJARN does. But uses synths and different style of drumming. Best album is "Hvis Lyset Tar Oss".

Then is this CARPATHIAN FOREST. Which is very good case. Best album (mCD) "Through Chasms, Caves and Titan Woods" is a brilliant piece of pure art. It has lot of influences Blasphemy, Hellhammer/Celtic Frost and Sodom. Everyone here should try this one.

Old norwegian legend, DARKTHRONE as last. Best album is "Transylvanian Hunger" but many people could disagree this. Other goodies are "Under A Funeral Moon", "Panzerfaust"(the legendary hellhammer influenced album) and "A Blaze In The Nothern Sky". DARKTHRONE uses quite raw riffing and drumming but still it's not as raw as ILDJARN is.

Well here's some I could review as many bands I know but not now.

Abazagorath, Ancient Rites, Bal-Sagoth, Anorexia Nervosa, Asgaroth etc...pretty much symphonic stuff, but i like quite a lot of the rawer stuff like Enochian Crescent and grand belial's key

I got over my black metal phase about 6 months ago. My black metal tastes are limited to old Mayhem, Emperor, Immortal, Grand Belial's Key, Nargaroth and some other NSBM.


On the topic of NSBM, to not listen to music for the sole purpose of lyrics is fucking moronic. Maybe everyone who is against National Socialism should like the Dead Kennedys because they are anti-Nazi! Listen to music for just that, music. If it has relateable/agreeable lyrics, even better. But to dismiss a band as shit for their political views or lyrics is as superficial as teenage girls listeening to pop because soak their panties with the site of pop stars. Actually most black metal bands are Athiest or Pagan, staying true to their Norse roots. They have strong hate for christianity because of the destruction it does the mind and humanity in general. Also, it was teh Christians who came and destroyed Pagan holy ground, holidays, and made anything left associated with Paganism 'evil'. Christmas was orginaly a Pagan hoiday, but Christians stole and decided to celebrate Christ's birthday on it despite the fact he was born something around May (I think).

Hellhammer is anti-immigration and slightly NS. I doubt he got married in a chruch since only about 10% of Norwiegens go to church.

They are in Germany (Sodom), Swizerland (Hellhammer/Celtic Frost), Sweden (Bathory), Denmark (Mercyful Fate/King Diamond), UK (Venom), Poland (KAT) and Brazil (Sarcofagó). Well Hellhammer DID get married in church. If it happened, why wouldn't it be true? And why it's not possible that Hellhammer could not change his views (same way as Varg changed his views from Satanism to NSBM in 91-93) to christianity? Maybe because of his wife I don't know but its possible. Maybe cause Dead killed himself and Varg killed Euronymous. Then there is only necrobutcher, but he don't have enough respects at Mayhem. So Hellhammer is now king of Mayhem and he can do anything what he wants, there is no longer great Dead and Euronymous watching everything what Hellhammer do.

For alot of bands corpse paint is just image, but it was started for a deeper meaning. In Norse mythology there is the Osakeri(sp?) a tribe of dead warriors who ride through the village at night and look like they are wearing modern day corpse paint, screaming in high pitch voices (bm vocals anyone?) and causing chaos.

Many Black metal bands put Satan into the music because it is against everything Christianity stands for, and degrading Christianity and the Black metal pasttime. But most are not Satanist in the traditional way (if they were then they would have to believe in God) or in the stupid Lavey way.

There's a lot more to music than just the instrumental and lyrical aspect, it's also a bit lifestyle and attitude toward it. The point i tried to make with prepy metal ('britney' metal) was, that there's more that meets the ear. Don't forget that when writing and recording (and performing) a song, it tells a story. Its not just the lyrics that tell something, but also the music itself and the way the bandmembers behave and think not touching their instruments at that time. Most artists (and yes, bm artists too) are considered a rolemodel to their listeners. Even though its just the music for most people in this forum thats important, doesn't it disturb you that nsbm is becomming populair? It not just they music most kids listen to, but the artist they idolize too.

And listening to a band also gives them support in some degree. There's all sorts of different kinds; you can buy cd's or merchandising, wear their name as a shirt or band patch, or drop their names in a metal forum. Even though your not into facism, in some way, listening to it does promote it slightly.

But i guess it won't affect people in their oppinion of nsbm, so go ahead and carry on listening to some "gestapo666". Go ahead, be my guest, but don't forget what facism achieved in the '40s, and the gross of neo-nazi's are nationalistic dumbfucks (with shitty low iq's...it's been proven)
