First guitar...
Hey,
I've been wanting to play guitar pretty much all my life but now I have enough to buy a decent one. About 350 canadian dollars to spend on just the guitar (after tax) cuz I'm probably getting an amp, stand, tuner, etc... for my birthday at the end of the month. Then a pedal once I learn to play a little.
A couple music stores have showed me my options within my price range. The one that was highly recommended for metal style is this;
http://www.zingsmusic.net/acatalog/...ic/RGX121S.html
http://www.musiciansnews.com/guitar...and_guita.shtml
The Yamaha RGX121S, the mist purple metallic one.
Comes to $340 after tax.
I have never picked up a guitar before but I am aware that it will take a long time and alot of practice before I get good. That is what I want though. I also feel that guitar is not something you quit, so I don't wanna start out with crap to see if I like it or not, I want something decent that will last me a while before I feel the need to buy another one.
Some people on the shitty Slayer forum (where I heard about this forum) told me, "once you have someone properly set it up for you, you'll be set."
Could someone go into a little more detail about what he said? I wasn't aware that there was settings to tweak, other than the strings that is. Also, if anyone has any comments or suggestions, please feel free to let me know. I kinda got banned from this paintball forum for saying 'tits'. After getting bitched at and having my post edited I argued about how stupid it was so I go banninated for 7 days. Fuckin' bastards. Until I can post there again, this is the only forum I have so I will definitely check back often.
Thanks dudes.

well basically, setting up is changing the string setup/height etc.
and your pickup height, bridge alignment, etc etc....
so yeah, it's the whole setup of your guitar, they can do it at the shop, to your preferences.
the yamaha ain't half bad, but I'de rather go with an RG series or a cheaper used jackson model or something, ofcourse, not every guitar fits you, just go out and play some, see what YOU like, and get that one!

I wouldn't even know what to like.
How should I tell them to set it up if I'm only just learning to play the basic shit?
Does anyone know of any good links to reading material as far as setting up a guitar goes, or even a decent lesson or something to get me started?
thx

um, you can try google, it's just a feel you get.
however, if you got to the guitar shop with your guitar, they can just setup your guitar standard, so it's just 'good', when you're used to your guitar you'll 'feel' what you think should be changed to your guitar (like lowering strings or raising pickups etc.)
ofcourse you'll heard the difference between guitars, just bring a guitar playing friend with ya, he'll help you along too.

That's the thing. The only 'guitar playing friends' I have live like 5 hours away. This is totally under my own initiative.

I really like this RGX.
I like the shape. Not too pointy, seems practical. The metallic purple with black looks really good in my opinion but the only things it doesn't have is another tone knob and it has 22 frets instead of 24 which apparently aren't a huge deal.
If anyone has anything to say about it or a suggestion on something else within my price range, please let me know.
I'm also interested in reading some stuff I should know. You can get me on msn at iambrock@hotmail.com if you wanna preach some guitar knowledge at me. I will gladly absorb all that is taught.

the rgx is a pretty good guitar, my mate had one as his first guitar. Its got quite a nice neck and has a quite a good sound for a fairly cheap guitar. Buy it!!

Anyone else's opinion?
Otherwise, I think I'm gonna go with it.
What about amps. All I need is a small one cuz I'm gonna be using headphones 99% of the time. Any specific kind to recommend? Also a band specific song book. What band would be a good place to start learning after I learn to actually play the thing.
Thanks again everyone.

I just bought my first electric guitar. I've been using my acoustic until I could
round up the funds to go the next step.
You need a guitar before you can answer your own questions.
A band song book? Hmm, I suggest you lay off that kind of thing and get a
decent guitar book with theory and chords. Do mandatory skill and technique
practicing before you get into song books. You'll be able to learn it so much
faster later on. This way, you'll be able to literally feel the improvement and
you be so much less frustrated.
