Dream Theater "Train Of Thought" Thread : SANCTIONED
This is the thread to talk about the new album, please dont make trouble for our moderators and post multiple threads pertaining to the new album.
That being said :
DREAM THEATER have set "Train Of Thought" as the title for their new album, tentatively due on November 11 through Elektra Records.
The complete track listing for the CD is as follows:
01. As I Am
02. This Dying Soul
03. Endless Sacrifice
04. Honor Thy Father
05. Vacant
06. Stream Of Conscious...
Go here to view the album cover : http://cover09.cduniverse.com/MuzeA.../500/501014.jpg
This is also the first Dream Theater album to contain the parental advisory sticker, which has been the center of many conversations on the Dream Theater boards. I personally dont care as long as the music is good, but people seem to be making a huge issue out of it.

That song is cool. But it really differs from their other songs.
Although you could see on the last album, that they played heavier.
But this is "really hard" for Dream theater. I really like the bass.

Yeah, that does sound a tad like rush, the beat and a little of the vocals. I like Rush, and that is a goooood song!

My Review
this album is less progressive and more metal. well....maybe more nu-metal. it does have some nu-metal sounding riffs, and it sounds like they ripped off some nu-metal riffs from other bands, and made them more technical (see above mp3)
but this is the best most technical nu-metal you'll ever hear.
and i do mean technical. John Petrucci goes totally balls out on this album, really showing off his sweeping and legato techniques which he never really showed before. I'd say this album is the one that has his most flashy and difficult solos.
1. As I Am: it's the least progressive, it has a straightforward structure, a tad long, doesn't seem like it though if you like the song. Awesome shreddy solo. Really draws influences from Pantera, Megadeth, and Zakk Wylde.
I like the vocal melody in the verse, the chorus is slow, but catchy.
2. This Dying Soul: This song is a continuation of Glass Prison from their last album, and it's not bad. could've been better though. melodic chorus and verse, and then it breaks into a riff from Glass Prison, that part is nice. but after that part they could've been heavier. yeah, you heard me. Glass Prison was heavier than this...
this is supposedly their heaviest album, but they have done heavier songs before. in my opinion, Heavy is an attitude, not just low tunings and technical riffs.
3. Endless Sacrifice: this song is more in the vein of the structure on the last album.
I'd say it's the best song on the album. the chorus sounds like creed, but i got over that. good soloes, verse, pre-chorus.
4. Honor Thy Father: Good Pre-chorus, and chorus, but i don't like the vocals in some other sections. i like the "watch where you walk" and the "don't cross the crooked step" is alrite. i dont' like the full minute of samples though. i hate when DT does this. they had like 3 minutes of samples in The Great Debate (last album), i forwarded through that song most of the time when i wanted to listen to it.
i like the keyboard riff that follows, but then it kinda gets boring before they get back to the pre-chorus. i would've been more satisfied if they put a guitar solo in there maybe, or catchy unison riff.
5. Vacant: the ballad of the album, it's an okay song. It's no Waits for Sleep though.
6. Stream of Consciousness: the heavy intro riff is kinda gay......and also reminds me of some video game ( i can't put my finger on it). gay because they have like this major sounding riff and they try to make it heavy and distorted. the tango part is good, and i love the funky bass riff. they needed to extend the riff or something man, that's a sweet riff. i don't like they how they go back to that Orion sounding riff into some classical gibberish and a lame Rudess solo. this track could've been better. compare this song to "Dance of Eternity"......and you'll see that this track has stuff missing from it.
7. In the Name of God, i love everything from this song, except the sappy, long and out-of-place chorus..... this song would be an excellent song if they had a different chorus.
It's a decent album though, good not great.....
The problem i have with the album is that it's not as powerful and catchy as the stuff before. I do like all of the songs to a certain extent, but i don't LOVE them.
I guess i feel a bit disappointed is 'cause i loved the last 2 albums, they set the bar really high for themselves with near-masterpieces, and then they come out with this RELATIVELY-mediocre album.
This would be a good album if it was from some other album, but this is Dream Theater man....come on.
so conclusion, it's a decent album, but could've been better. If you were turned off by DT's progressiveness before or lack of heaviness, this album might be the door in to getting into this excellent band. don't be too afriad of the "nu-metal" references i made (it depends on what your'e opinion of nu-metal is), try it out.

Thanks for the review Atif. That's one man's opinion.....I on the other hand love the album. I do agree with Atif about Petrucci going all out on this album. His solos are totally awesome, and really flashy. My favorite songs are "As I Am" "In The Name Of god" and "Endless Sacrifice". I only see nu metal influences on a few parts of a few songs.....the worst being Honor Thy Father when James starts rapping and Petrucci has an annoying muddy sounding riff that comes in. I wish Myung woulda wrote some lyrics for this album, he is my favorite lyricist in the band. Overall this album kicks ass and I say it's my second favorite release of the year behind Anthrax's We've Come For You All.

on this album, Rudess uses the keyboards more tastefully with more of a crunchy, distorted tone and a wah effect. the keyboards fit better, and they're usually used most of the time as a compliment to the guitar or bass.
and DT figured out that because of the low tunings, JLB doesn't have to sing as high.
so if you didn't like DT because of the keyboards, and high pitch singing, there ya go.

Yeah they are an awesome band and they have probably one of the greatest guitarists out there but If the whole album is like As I Am then Im not sure if this album will be as good as the rest of them.

As I Am is the most straightforward track on the album, the other ones are more progressive.
Endless Sacrifice sounds like a more typical DT song.
the instrumental sounds like Liquid Tension Experiment, go figure.
