replace the strings when needed... no need to be a cheap ass. besides old strings sound like crap.

a friend of mine (who has been playing guitar for over ten years, and who's dad has been in different bands for ages) says, that he boils the strings. simply puts them in a pot of boiling water and waits until the sweat has come off. haven't tried this myself, maybe it works. i guess it's still easier to just change strings.

how often you guys usually change strings? i've heard many different opinions (time vareis from like a month to "as long as they last"). any suggestions?

I change them when they break...

but if you want to keep 'em longer, rubbing alcohol takes that black mold right off. Every once in a while I do a guitar clean...rubbing alcohol to the strings, and windex to the body. Makes her look new again....

if i'm not busy with other things, and they've been on for about a month and a half or so, i'll change em, but when i'm real busy, they are staying on till one of em breaks.

Boiling doesn't work.

it'll only give you the tone back for a week or so, replacing is much better...

for my bass strings and guitar strings I use Fast Fret, which keeps your strings clean and slick, so they won't corrode as fast and lose tone.

I replace my guitar strings and bass strings once a month, thats how long they last, bass strings are supposed to last longer I guess, but I play a LOT of bass, and I teach bass, so I use them intensively, I guess.

for guitar strings, they sound like crap even faster, which sucks. but guitar strings aren't as fucking expensive as a set of DR bass strings (45 bucks)

ya, i use fast fret or that dr. string or some shit like that. if you wash your hands before playing and use fast fret regularly, your strings should last quite awhile.

Then stop using a paper towel, and use a cloth. Paper towels will make it staticy, and as soon as you plug in your guitar, the electricity and the paper particles will be a vacume for all the dust in the air.

i use string cleaner/lubricant stuff too, about once a week, i play with my band alot and were a hardcore/melodicore/blackmetal ish style, and i abuse my strings alot, i usually end up replacing a string every pratice, and since we pratice about every other day, i usually have pretty fresh strings. but i get strings for dirt cheap because of a hookup i have so i can affard to go through em fast, as for bass, its just kinda a thing i have, i play it every now and then, but i replace the strings every couple months because ernie ball slinkys(or just about any other bass strings)arent cheap, and since i dont play bass nearly as often as i play guitar, i dont go through strings as fast and they stay cleaner longer.
but i would definitly suggest string cleaner/lube, especially if you have dirty hands)jk)

i also do that. pour vodka on cloth, loosen the strings and clean them.

works fine, they sound almost new again.
