having trouble with tapping...
i am a self-taught guitarist of many years, and can play a lot of stuff, but i never was able to find anything (from videos, internet, mags, etc.) that would really explain to me how to tap. any suggestions?
thanks

I can't really explain it unless I show you...so just go to any site, namely ultamateguitar.com, or OLGA.net. They would explain it in writing and may have some little videos of it too.

I tap with my middle finger all the time. Its easy to do once you practice a lot. The hardest part for you might be aiming with your tapping hand (it was for me) but practice will take care of that. Try the solo part in Walk by Pantera to get a basic tap. Or if you like Death try Voice of the Soul and theres a tapping part in there.

Always tap with your middle finger. That way, on stage, you can still hold your pick when you tap to help you go back to picking faster and easier. As for songs, "Eruption" by Van Halen is a very good begginer introduciton to tapping. Its sounds hot but isnt tuff at all. You just gotta build you tapping calous

I rarely tap with my middle finger, I just stick the pick in my mouth, tapping with index. Or I hold the pick with my thumb and middle to tap with my index.
(I pick with my thumb and index)

i'd be afraid i'd accidentally slap myself in the face when my right hand makes the mad dash to get the pick out of my mouth.

As far as I have seen, there really is nothing special about tapping. Just hammer on with a finger of your choice on your picking hand. I'd recommend using the middle finger. Start slow and get quicker. I used to tap with my index finger, having the pick in my mouth, but some of my own stuff requires quick changes from picking to tapping, so now I allways tap with my middle finger (and if needed, the pinky (seldom the ring finger)). I still find it difficult to hit the more narrow frets with my pinky, but it's getting better.

I tap with my index since I hold the pick with my middle and thumb.

Does anyone have some good tapping exercices? I don't know many riffs that involve tapping.

tapping
the most common way to tap is to do it like this:
-t19-p15-p12-t19-p12-
you can do it more interresting, like this:
-t19-h15-t19-h15-h12-p15-e.t.c play it like triads. This type of tapping is used by Randy Rhoads on Flying high again.
another way is:
-t19-h15-p19-h15-h14-h12-e.t.c also triads.
its cool to tap the chords Em-C-G-D:
-t24-h15-p19-|t24-h15-p20-|t22-h15-p19-|t22-h14-p-17
Em C G D
play each chords some times before you do the next. Try to figure out other chords.

Do you guys have more elaborate stuff? Or just exercices to improve my right hand's agility (using more than one finger) and tapping across different strings.

wouldnt be hard to write your own exercises I dont think, just take a simple chord progression and turn it into tapped triad arppeggios. just make sure you practice the technique with some bit of thought with the notes, mindless technique is worthless.
do shit like
h10-h13-t17-p13-p10-h13-t17-p13-p10, or
t17-p10-h13-t17-p10-h13-t17, or
t17-p10-h13-p10-t17-p10-h13-p10
.... so forth
add some slides in there
h10-h13-t17/16-p10-h13-t16/17-p13-p10.... so forth
and then write some more rythmic shit out, instead of playing strait triplets, 16ths or what ever give your tap more value and so on so forth...
you can double tap too. anyone else care to make this more "elaborate"?

Any specific advice about techniques to improve my muting of the other (untapped) strings while tapping, so they don't sound at all? Or should I just practice tapping enough that it comes naturally...

I usually tap with my pick, it seems to produce a brighter sound. I use those dunlop pointy picks. Here's a fun little tapping exercise
t7-p0-h3-h5--t10-p0-h5-h7....
When played fast it sounds pretty cool

you could just start an arpegio and run it up the strings.
t12-p0-t4-t7-t12--
start on low E and run it up to high e
then change it to like
t12-p0-t5-t8-t12
ot this is somthing satriani does on some song.
p0-t11-t12-p0-t9-t12-p0-t7-t12-p0-t9-t12-p0-t7-t12-p0-t5-t12-p0-t4-t12
p0-t5-t12-p0-t7-t12-p0-t9-t12-p0-t7-p0-t5-t12-p0-t4-t12-p0-t2-t12-p0-t2-t12-p0-t2-t12-p0
that sure was alot of work for sumthing so simple.juist get your taps as fast and clean as apossible.

Turn the pick to the point is facing you (perpindicular to the strings) push down and pull it off the string away from you. like slide it off the string away from you. i'm tryin to think of a better way to say it. Do ya get what i'm sayin? try it out, it sounds great when done right.

you don't need to switch the pick around, just turn your hand as if you were tapping using your finger, push the pick on the string, then slide it off away from you in order to pull off the note

I like this one, from Devil's Island by Megadeth Intro
e|-t19-p15-p12--t19-p15-p12--t19-p15-p12--t19-p15-p12-----------------------------------------------------------
B|--------------------------------------------------------t20-p15-p12--t20-p15-p12--t20-p15-p12--t20-p15-p12--
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-t19-p14-p11--t19-p14-p11--t19-p14-p11--t19-p14-p11--t18-p13-p10--t18-p13-p10--t18-p13-p10--t18-p13-p10-
I find I can tap faster with a pick because you don't need to press as hard, but I'm more accurate with my finger

I found that learning the tapping riff from Cannibal Corpse's 'The Spinesplitter' was a good way to build up my tapping skills (just look for the tab). You pretty much have to tap with your fingers and it helped work up co-ordination for harder stuff.

Practice, Practice, Practice
Its all in the practice, I just listened to the solo from "one" by metallica and played along with that
left index finger on 12 high E string, middle finger on 15 high E string, the right hand index on 17 with pull offs and you got it...listening helps alot when tring to learn, you have to hear it in your head before anything else.
THEN WHEN YOU GET GOOD I DARE YOU TO TRY POWER RANGERS THEME SONG, Its great once you have it amazing for practice to, orginally played by none other than Bucket Head!
