Teaching someone how to play
Hi!
A friend of mine is about to buy a guitar and amp, and he asked me if I could teach him every week.
What should I teach him first... Exerc. for left and right hand seperately?
And then slowly on to powerchords and stuff?
Any ideas on this?
Thanks

you'll have to be professional about it, just cause he's a friend, don't give him slack. If he wants to learn, he shall have to follow the rules.
first you should teach him names of strings and such. Thats always what i learned first. Teach him the very basics, ask him if there is anything he wanted to know, if its too advanced for him, just tell him that he can learn it later.

start out with an insult. Break him down...call him a fucking idiot, and I'm tired of this shit cause you fucking suck. I never want to see you again, because I can't teach you anything, because I'm not a good teacher, and you aren't a good student.
....teaching friends 101. don't.

well, start with the obvious "how to hold the pick" and "how to place your fingers correctly" etc etc, then show him a few exercises thatll build up strength(chromatics would be a good idea, or just a basic scale esp major/minor)
oh and you could start teaching him a song(let him pick one) and just go riff by riff, that way he'll learn a bit about how stuff is structured too and basic tab reading
and if you find tabs with the standard musical notation, thatd be another good thing to teach....
don't flood him with details the first day though hehe
oh and show him how to tune, maybe how to change strings too(chances are he bought a guitar on display, so his strings are probably shitty+dirty)
also, for the exercises, dont make the mistake a lot of teachers make..dont give him only exercises that are linear esp 1 2 3 4 rinse&repeat...have him wander around the neck a lot

once he/she knows the ovbious stuff like holding the pick etc teach him/her a little simple riff or tune etc that he/she knows. I have taught in the past and i always start off with metallicas unforgiven as its very simple sounds great and gets them used to switching strings etc. just do it as simple as possible. dont worry too much about the slides etc. or if they are into system of a down try teaching them the sugar riff. very simple. might as well be a exercise.

I'd first teach him, how to play an acustic guitar, that means chords etc. because that is the very basic of playing guitar, and if he can play the standard chords, like D,C,G,E,A, and if he can change between them without searching finger-positions, you can begin with powerchords and some easy riffs/scales(pentatonics?) mayby, it will frustrate him, that he has to learn that stuff, but it will help him, because he will learn to hit strings excacly and quickly
oh jeah, dont forget to teach him some theorie, it will be important!

lol, german english, sounds funny.
anyways, teaching a friend isn't really a good idea because you can't really bitch about them since they'll bitch back, lol.
but if you really want to learn him some stuff, teach him chords, some pentatonic stuff, and learn him to play tabs (or even notes if he knows some note stuff allready)
he probably wants to play his favorite songs first, just get tabs for some songs he likes after he's got the idea of playing (like, after the basic dumbass shit.)

I'd say that there are a few things you should keep in mind when teaching.
1. Get your student to understand that practice is the only way.
2. Get your student to understand that accuracy is important.
3. Get your student to understand that solos need backing (ie make sure he's a good rythm player before teaching him leads and solos and stuff)

Don't teach him unless your a professional or else you are probably teaching him your mistakes because I am sure you don't paly everything right, because I know that I don't either and noone does. If you do teach him, then teach him the very basics or if you ever took guitar lessons then teach him what you got taught. First start with shit like holding the pick, name the strings, how to tune, then get a pic of a guitar and have him name all the parts and what they do, show him chords, show him style like how to hold it the proper way and how not to put your thumb over the neck where you see it. Just do all that basic shit if you wan't and know how to the right way and let him to take private lessons afterwards. Good luck.
Hail!

I'm patient, he's eager to learn, and I still remember the time I had to do that all by myself
