A new bass...

Well I have been playing guitar for a while and I have never really tried a bass and know nothing about them. Anyways my friends band lost their bassist and need a new one. Now they have recruited me to take the spot. We are gonna go half and half on the gear. We are expectiong on spending about $1200 or so for 2 basses (live gigs switched tunings) and an amp. Now if you can suggest me some stuff for this it will be greatly appreciated. They play mainly metal like Tool/Godsmack/Metallica mix kinda stuff. I would prefer a 5 and a 4 string but whatever you think is a good setup is always welcome. Thank you

I think I should add that the lead guitarist suggested a peavy 112. (i think) and then we could set it up through his PA system if it is not loud enough.

the peavey (bandit) 112 is a guitar amp. maybe he's talking about the TNO or TNT.

anyways, maybe you could look for a cheaper series ibanez or a nice Cort (same bodystyle, neck etc, but cheaper and some have better options)
