Could anyone give me some advice on sweeping techniques?
I have just been trying the sweeping techniques provided in the sticky topic and realised there alot harder than they look.
I honestly have know idea where I should start, or how long I should practise them on a daily bases.
Also how long did it take for you to master this technique?

what problems are you encountering when you try to perform those sweeps?
if you don't know where to start, start here:
http://www.ultimateguitarpage.com/technique/
and check out the "Art of sweeping"
how long should you practice? practice em as much as you can, if you feel that you want to spend all your time improving that technique at the moment. most people like practicing other techniques in there practice sessions too.
people can tell you how long it took to master the technique, but bottom line is, everybody is different, and it won't take you the exact same amount of time that it took them; it may take longer or faster than their time.

|--14----------------------14---------------------14-etc etc etc----------------------------|

Easy as hell and sounds cool. Practice practice practice...Start extremely slow and build up your speed!

the basic problem i am having is my left hand just doesn't seem to match the speed
my picking hand does, and when i try to dampen the sound of the notes i just get a load of ringing harmonics.
Thanks for the site By the way atifman
And also for the tab metal=life

I had the opposite problem when I started out. My picking hand couldn't match the speed of my fingering hand so my sweeps sounded like finger-tapping. I still do have the same problem but I've learned how work with it so it sounds good. My picking has gotten very fast but still not compatible with my fingering hand (maybe because I use a 2.0 guage pick). My advice to you is work on your dexterity. Do some finger exercises (Type a lot, get one of those hand grip shits, and visit your girlfriend very often...if you know what I mean )
Good Luck to ya

Do whatever feels right. Don't make guitar playing into "work" just have fun with it. Think mentally about sweeping then bust out a few.

Right on
And 40 minutes a night should be good for speed but remember to also work on presicion because having fast fingers isn't gonna help if you can't hit the right strings.

Yeah, i do my finger exercises with a metronome so i am pretty accurate with hitting the right strings, my metronome only reaches a tempo of 240 though, is that fast enough?
Also if you could recommend a song with good sweeping techniques with a tab that's roughly correct i would really appreciate it.

Try Dissection's "Where Dead Angels Lie" during the intro and verses. The rhythm guitar is actually doing the sweeping, and it's 16th note triplets at about 80 b.p.m., so it shouldn't be too difficult.

Everytime I Die by Children of Bodom has a cool 3 string sweep in the intro. A lot of Testament songs have good sweep arpeggios.
go to www.guitartricks.com and browse around and you'll find good sweep techniques. Some have audio

Sweep Q.
OK this is probably a personal oppinion Q. But on an arpeggio under this, when its like 3 strings on the same fret, do you just bar it with 1 finger and try to shift the weight for singular note sound, or do you use 3 fingers, the first idea is kinda hard, but the 2nd is just inconvienant.
