Guitar Pedals for Death Metal
Hey,
I'm looking at purchasing a distortion pedal in the near future, and I was looking for some advice from some experienced metal players. I need something with swerious balls and crunch because I play a lot of death metal stuff. I've looked at 3 models in particular and heard pros and cons for each. however, I don't know what to believe so I've come here as my last resort.
These are the models I was reffering to:
BOSS MT-2 Metal Zone
DoD FX86 Death Metal Distortion Pedal
Marshall Jackhammer
Opinions anyone?

Boss MT-2: More variation in sound, so that you can in turn, create your own sound, I personally think it doesn't have enough of a 'raw' sound, kind of souns thin...
DOD FX86: Awesome pedal, has more balls than the MT-2 and Jackhammer but be prepared for feedback. Also out of this you can get many tones but not as many as the MT-2
Jackhammer: I'd say nothing special, just another distortion pedal for metal, not DM
Digitech Metalmaster: Good fuckin pedal, I've only used it through a B-52 stack and an Ibanez RG270 and it's my favorite so far. Has the balls of the DOD and tonal range of the MT-2
DOD Grunge: I use this to play DM and it sounds awesome, not as good as the FX86 but still can hold it's own
best bet I'd say is the Digitech, if not go for a DOD, lots of feedback but get a noise gate if you can't handle it...

if you decide to get the dod death metal i suggest that you decide to buy pro leads like Planet Waves leads. Thats what i did and it elliminated all the feedback and static shite. It is fucking amazing now, NO SHITTY HORRIBLE FEEDABACK!!! YEAH . I would get pro leads for it before you even decide of getting a noisegate.

OK, I checked out the Metal Master and found this:
http://digitech.com/products/metalmaster.htm
Click on LISTEN and tell me if the pedals that this pedal can "supposedly" emulate really sound like that, or if its just a crappy imitiation. I'll probably buy this if it offers the sounds of the other two pedals, and especially for the "Tour of Hell" setting they have. That is the ultimate death distortion that I was looking for. Thanks a lot for helping me find this.

the digitech metal master costs shit loads more than the boss and dod. My dod death metal cost me bout £30. I aint got a boss mt2 but there bein sold at about £59 and the digitechs sellin for £85. So for your money your better off gettin a Dod death metal and probably some other effects. It would probly still work out cheaper than the digitech.

I got a Metalzone, and if the metalmaster is expensive I wont buy it.
I've never seen a Metalmaster pedal in norway anyway.
AND... the guy who played on the demonstration, at the homepage, is probely good enough to get anything sound good...

Zoom Tri-Metal. Best solid-state distortion I've ever heard. You get amazing distorion that doesnt mudy up. And if you are stupid enough to want to scoup the mids, it has a range control for the mids so you can make your tone total shit if you like. But you get a great sound with everything at 12 o'clock and with some tweaking from them all at the posituon you get your perfect sound. Its like $60, but I heard it got discontinued. Real shame, such a great pedal.

DOD - $50
TRI-METAL - $50
BOSS - $80
DIGITECH - $80
Those where the cheapest i could find them. Most prices r from musicians friend except the Tri-Metal is from Sam Ash.

A flanger is pretty cool for Death Metal depending on how you
set it up. Sometimes it gives a very thick flanging sounds with Distortion.
Try using two dist. pedals also....It may give a shit load of feedback,
but its worth a try.

I have the DOD Death Metal distortion pedal. In my opinion it's the best distortion I've ever played.....and I've played many. It's not really Death Metal distortion though, I think it sounds more Thrash than anything. Good for rythm but a little too screechy for leads.

go with a mmx metal monster, it has a tube in it! its sooo much better than the boss metalzone, digitech, dod, zoom. but its like $150 american
an even better choice would be a mesa/boogie bottle rocket, it's about $200 but its like havin a dual rectifier in a stompbox.

yeah, except it sounds like shit compared to a real rect
out of the list the thread starter noted, I'de pick the MT-2 because of its versatility and tone...
tube pedals are nice, but compared to the tube amps they're modelled after, they sound like crap, they are a nice addition though... guess I'm not much of a pedal pusher.

yeh, but just about every distortion pedal, even most amp's distortions, sound like shit compared to the real dual rec. and the bottle rocket isnt exactly modeled after the rec., the vtwin pedal pre amp is though, but its like $300+ and it sounds alot better than the bottle rocket.(still not as good as the real dual rec. though,
the big muff is a good cheaper pedal, its a really thick one, great for warm rythm.
i don't like the metalzone as much as i used to, once you've had a real tube amp, you don't want to go back.
the best thing to do is sell your mom's car and buy a bogner uberschall (head+cab=$3,500), then move in with your bandmate in a different state so she cant find you, then you can live happily ever after, and bust out the heaviest shit ever!

well that sounds like about the best idea I've heard in here all year, haha
the E-H big muff, I think its too vintage sounding and not tight enough, but I'm not a big E-H fan, I only like their microbass-synth.

they also have an amp modeler(its red) it kinda has the same idea, but instead of modeling distortion pedals, it models amp distortions, both are about $250 here in the u.s.a.

For me, it's DOD's fx86b, hands down, it has the ballsiest low end of any pedal on the market, except maybe for Digitech's "Metalmaster". Don't get me wrong, I liked the tone that Digitech's "Metalmaster" has, but because it has a digital processing chip in it, it eats up a fresh 9V. in like, 20 minutes. that's cool if you have an adapter, but at a gig it's a majior pain in the ass. The best advice anyone can really give you would be to try all of them out with your rig and see which pedal gives you the best tone.

I have the DOD. It kicks ass and all that. But it's true, the feedback is incredible. Quite cheap also (around $40). I think it's a good buy for beginners like me.

The DOD is a heaving pile cow shit, it was my first pedal and I thought it was great as I never played through any distortion besides it. The Zoom Tri-Metal throws the heaving pile of shit which is the DOD death metal out the window.

I've played tons of distortion pedals and I've got to say the DOD is the best. If you have good humbuckers and a good amp, it doesn't feedback as much. Also, you need to learn to control it.
Anyways, my dad recently bought a Danelectro Black Coffee Metal Distortion pedal and it's pretty good also. It has level, bass, and treble, no mids...perfect

I have both the Metal Zone MT-2, and The DOD Death Metal. Personaly I like both the same so I hooked them both up together, and now I have a sweet ass tone, but I need a noise gate, because theres too much feedback.

You all must be deaf, or just have the worst concept of good tone. The DOD is muddy, noisy (I played through with an EMG-81, a passive Seymore Duncan, and a stock B.C. Rich) and is built like shit. I like the Zoom because you have a clear tone while still having high gain. I like to hear every one of my notes and not have it muddy up.

I think Darko or someone should make this a Sticky in the gear section, since a lot of us seem interested in metal pedals.

Ok, here is the EQ settings on my amp:
Gain: 10
Volume: doesnt matter
Low:8
mid:2
High:6
Reverb:2+ RP7 Reverb... so that should be about 4 or 5 for Reverb
This is a tone with BALLS. I am using my buit in Marshall distortion... Let me check my Metal Zone...
Yeah, it sounds fine with the same settings.

On my amp, it's...
bass: 4
mid: 0
treble: 2
rarely I crank up the reverb.
.....although, I don't need to mess with the amp because I instead change the settings on my pedal...but still, I don't use a lot of bass because with my amp, the louder it gets, the more I have to turn down the bass.

Don't know much about the pedal, but my bros old Line 6 spider 212
had an awesome distorted tone. I'm pretty sure, its sometimes better
if u use amp distortions because some pedals sound crappy on some
amps.
