Hi y'all.

Allright, a good friend of mine knows a 17 year old guitarplayer.

He's raised in a musical family, they have a blues band (dad and brothers).

He got lessons from his brother, and now that guy plays Vai and Satriana like they were amateurs!!!

Is this simply talent, at this young age? (He plays guitar for only a couple of years... at most 5 ).

Too me it sounded crazy but those are the facts... He hasn't got an own style but his technique is supreme.

If he gets even better, he might become another famous soloist?

What's ur idea on this?!

17 isn't that young. If he doesn't have his own style, it won't mean shit then. So all his good playing ability is wasted.

some people are just born with talent, and have a crapload of time to practice.

he can only become a famous soloist if he develops his own unique style. you can't make good music if you've only have good chops.

His good playing ability is definatly not wasted! 17 IS young and he has plenny of time to find his style, which can be extremly difficult. I agree that the best guitarist out thier are the best partialy because of there skill level but also because of thier easily recidnisable style. He may end up like Jimmy Hendrix, or he may end up like Malmsteen.

Exodus:
5 years and hes doing so well sounds great. He probably practices like crazy and not so much of a social life (something you must sacrafice to become great at things sometimes). But he most defenatly has a talent for guitar. Just like artists have a knack for drawling, it comes easier to some people. But don't let this discourage you, anyone can be the best...they just have to work at it. Look at him as compitition/inspiration.

i completely disagree. 17 IS fairly young. and i don't think you need your own style. there are lots of great soloist's out there that have a similar style and are still famous. so all his good playing ability is not wasted.

for me...a little from column A, and a little from column B.

17 is young to me. especially if he's already IN a band.
that takes time, and it's already done, now he gets to
take time practicing.

Personally, to those who are forcing themselves to believe in tallent, it only handi-caps them. Ask anyone who is good at something, none of them say it is tallent, they just enjoy and work at it. It's alot like reading actually. If we believed Reading took tallent, then it would be that only a select few could do so, but we have given the knowlage and belief that everyone can learn to read.

Same applies with learning to play guitar (As well as draw, write, program, ect). Believing you need some inlayed Tallent, only says "I might not have the tallent needed" and usually crushes most who wish to do something, be it play guitar, or simply learn to paint.

As far as learning, it is a matter of three things: 1) how badly do you want to play? 2) How much do you enjoy playing? 3) How much time do you practice?

Everything else, is just a complication.

Eh I agree with you partcially. I believe that there is such a thing as talent. I have seen people that have played for 3 years and some one that has been playing only a year and they are better. Some people just have a nack for things. Thats why not EVERYONE is a natural artist, but can be if they work at it. This is where I agree with you, you can be just as good if you work harder. And if you belive that you dont have the talent then that can put you down.

ok, but what about people that don't work at it and are good. they have talent. i believe there is such a thing as talent but you have to work at it to get excellent.
