The Half-Year Shuffle

So, it's halfway through the year, everyone in Australia is doing their tax returns and wondering if we claim Built-For-Wildlife condoms as a tax deduction, and we've got a bunch of stuff to review...

TOP FIVE RELEASES THAT ATE BABIES THIS YEAR
- Good solid records from good solid bands. This is what keeps the music going.

1. Amon Amarth - God Christ in Hell, this was brutal
2. Behemoth - now definitely my favourite 'evil' band
3. The Haunted - One Kill Wonder will be a top 5 disc at the end of the year, it kicks too much ass
4. Anthrax - they can still do it - I don't think anyone really doubted that though
5. Dying Fetus - surprise entry with a band line-up that's more changed than Michael Jackson's nose.

The Zooper-Zpecial FBS Longevity Award for Lasting and Killing Many Babies Over Time
- Tied between Overkill and Opeth, who are both older than the mental age of the average 'tabber but both made fucking sweet records this year. Killbox 13 was just fucking solid. Damnation was a little below Opeth's par (which is far, far higher than most others), making it only brilliant instead of pure ass-grinding brilliant.

The Wannabe Memorial Award for Nu-Metal Tolerance
- I was fucking surprised to learn by prolonged experience that I rather liked Chimaira. The Impossibility of Reason was like a technically improved Slipknot without all the terrible faggotry.

The Slayme Dedication - To A Band That Hurt Everything And Deserve To Become Huger
- Three Words - LAMB OF GOD.

The "Dude" Award for Achieving JUST PLAIN SUCKITUDE
- An enormous no-contest. St. Anger is an odious piece of shit, and I hated it. Metallica = Bumcake.

The Disgusted Look On My Face Award for A Band That Just Kinda Lost Their Way
- Another push-over. Soilwork was a moderately enjoyable and very accessible new thrash band. With Figure No. 5 release, I wish to downgrade that to band I don't care about anymore.

The Most Closed Thread Award - An Album The Mods Hated Because It Caused Hissy-Fits
- Fucking Cradle of Filth - they can't do anything without arousing the anger of a million teenage net-goths. All of whom want to start their own thread and somehow think their opinion is special. Cunts, one and all. Stop releasing albums Dani, I'm getting tired of deleting threads about how gay you are.

Last of all, the band happenings...

GOODNESS - Judas Priest, the original, large and in charge!
BADNESS - Immortal breaking up. Despite all the jokes, I'll miss them.

And that was my 2003.

NOW, WHAT DID I FORGET? Help me out, cunts.

I didn't catch up with it because of my hatred for the suckitude of 1919 Eternal.

I'm pretty pleased with the new Lamb of God album too. Production isn't as great as their first, but it grows on you.

Interesting list, Mr. Sane. I agree with only one of your top 5 though. Here's mine, so far this year of course

1. Anthrax - We've Come For You All
2. Chimaira - The Impossibility of Reason
3. Lamb of God - As The Palaces Burn
4. Superjoint Ritual - A Lethal Dose of American Hatred
5. Sepultura - Roorback

Anthrax - 5 years in the making, and fucking pissed off. I've known people that hate Anthrax love this album. I've known people that don't like metal that got into this album and become rabid fans. I've seen Anthrax fans finally put down the whole Joey vs. John thing because of this album. This is THE metal album this year, call me a loyalist, but this is the one that's going to finish above everyone else.

Chimaira - I liked 'em even when they had that nu-metal tinge to them. They surprised the god damn fuck out of me though and recorded an album that tears the nuts off of the devil himself.

Lamb of God - I think Scott Ian said it best once, it's like old school Slayer except it's not.

Superjoint Ritual - This is what we're left with. This and Down at least. It's been a gradual thing with me, coming to the realization that there is no more Pantera. This record for me surpasses the original, mainly in songwriting and feeling. It's got the same old Superjoint sound, but it feels more organic.

Sepultura - Roorback was certainly an appropriate title, even if it really means something else. They fucking stomped back in and owned. If you're avoiding this album because of Derrick Green, or because of their last few efforts then you have no business calling yourself a fan of this band, go fuck yourself.

Remember, we still have some motherfuckers left this year. Morbid Angel, Machine Head(who will rule this year, I swear it) and Iron Maiden to name a few.

Absolute shit of 2003:

Black Label Society - Blessed Hellride. I liked this album on the first listen, even though I fucking hate that god awful single with Ozzy "Sharon's bitch" Osbourne. Zakk has cashed in for the play, which ain't so bad but he really needs to stop writing fucking shit and return to Pride and Glory. Pride and Glory was material that had breathing room, it wasn't the compressed pick squeal romp like BLS is. Words really can't describe how pissed I am at this man and his band. People hail BLS like some kind of metal messiah when really they're just trapped in a giant metal cliche with a guitarist that's lost his way.

Huge Disappointment:

The Haunted - One Kill Wonder. I like this album, I do. I don't like that it sounds exactly like everything they've ever done. I let it slide on "The haunted made me do it", but I can't overlook it anymore. Even though I can't deny they write kick ass tunes, THEY DON'T GROW. THEY WRITE THE SAME GOD DAMN MOTHERFUCKING THING.

Wasn't my top 5, but either way... I'll have to get that Superjoint Ritual album...

Wow, that surprises me. I hadn't heard anyone who didn't like it until this thread. I personally think it's his best effort since Sonic Brew. 1919 was a huge dissapointment for me, and this put him right back on track. How can one not like tracks like "suffering overdue" and "doomsday jesus". The guitar solos on this album are superb, and they show why Zakk is still number one guitar hero.
All that being said, it's just my two cents. I know not all will agree, just thought I would share why it has my vote for album of the year, thus far.

I actually haven't gotten Type O Negative's new album, and it is the only one so far that I can think of that I have been looking foward to.

Damnation and a Day was good too.

Oh fuck, I totally forgot. I ordered the new Type O yesturday from amazon, and I also ordered the new Kovenant album. They finally got a new one out. I guess it is really electronic. I don't know what the vocals are like though. I really can't wait for that one. It is called Seti, or S.E.T.I., I'm not sure.
