Get a solid mahogany body, loads of sustain, heavy but you'll get used to it.

Alder is widely used by ibanez, jackson ect..... its also cheaper than mahogony but the sustain isent as great but its ALOT lighter lol

I know alder and basswood and mahogany are widely used. I do not know much about them soundwise, except that mahogany is supposed to give a pretty "fat" tone. I'm currently building a guitar in birch, but it's pretty far from finnished, so I can't tell you what it sounds like...

i'm not sure what the body is on my '94 jackson, i'm thinking
it's maple, with the WORST sustain of maybe like 3 secs on
high notes. 
edit that---it's a basswood body, maple neck.

I've got the same problem with my samick.....high notes probably get a max of about 5 seconds.

Since i think your making a electric guitar the wood wont really make that much of difference sure mahogany will have mroe sustain thats poplar but when using massive amounts of distortion it dosent really matter. Poplar is dirt cheap, alder is kinda heavy but still fairly inexpensive, mahogany is heavy and can get pricy. as for the other woods i dunno.
