Question any expert advice on strats?

I've been saving up for an electric for a while. (metal just doesn't sound right unplugged!) I was thinking about getting a Stratocaster 'cuz they're so damn cheap compared to other guitars. Do strats work for metal or should I keep saving for a nicer guitar? I was also thinking about a Les Paul Voodo.

What I have heard, Stratocasters aren't optimzed for metal exactly. Sure, you can play metal with it, but if you're gonna play just metal for it, I think you should look up threads on this forum with the search option.

I don't know why I answered this thread, I'm not an stratocasterexpert!

yes!
pretty much any brand will work for any genre of music, it all depends if it works for you....

unless you're a beginner, GO OUT TO THE STORE AND TRY SOME GUITARS OUT. tell the old dinos, or stoned punks your price range and they'll help you out.

cheap strats are good for beginners, but keep your options open, you could get a b.c.rich bronze warlock, or an Ibanez GRX (which is similar to a strat)

I hate fenders. To me the feel like a skinny piece of bulsa wood with strings. The pick-ups just annoy the hell out of me too. When ever I play, i some how manage to scrap them. I personally think that they are not a good all around guitar for metal. I cant get a real good chunkyness feel when I play in B with them and soloing just dosent work on thier for me. But thats just my opinion and some people love 'em... I on the other hand hate 'em.

I love you atifman

Bingo...

Yes, people have used strats for metal (Stef Burns with Alice Cooper, the boys from Iron Maiden for example). They're not widely used, but they can be.

I'm almost positive Cryptopsy uses Strats, or at least one of the guitar players does......so, if you've ever heard Cryptopsy, you know that Strats can be used for anything.

I for one am like Darko, i despise Strats. I'm not big on the feel of them, or how they play.....and they seem to be lately (well, past 5-10 years) be associated with punk music, mainly pop-punk, which has made me hate them more. I know that's a really shitty attitude to have, but i can't help it, that's just how i am.

I think the expensive Strats probably feel nice. I've actually considered buying one in the past (1000$+ range) because some of the greatest guitar players use them (Clapton, Malmsteen...just to name a couple).

Like the others said, you get what you pay for. If you're gonna buy a 150$ strat, then don't expect it to sound amazing....or even good at all. I strongly suggest waiting until you can afford something that's at least 500$, but if you can hold off go higher.

Lots of people use strats in metal..Iron Maiden, Cryptopsy, Marduk, and Sepultura to name a few.

Strats are about the worst guitars made for metal...You can't get a real good chunky palm mute or anything and the bridge sucks. Unless you get a Strat with a Floyd Rose but I've never played one. Ibanez make good quality strat style guitars for low cash and you get a lot out of 'em.

Cryptopsy does yous strats, I always found that interesting because I can point out a strat sound alot. Ive played one good strat which is my friends (2000+!). It plays great but not worth 2000. I also hate the design, they all look the same.

les paul goth = life

thats what ive had for a while and i just think its a great fuckin metal guitar. i would like a rhodes or something so i could get those higher notes easier for solos and shit but i think it sounds great for metal. people say les pauls are too heavy but you gotta be weak if its too heavy for you. im skinny as hell and i think its just fine. i might be lookin at some parkers in a while though. . maybe for christmas. those flys are so damn light.

strats suck for metal.

but anywho

strats are a very good guitar, if you get them with the maple neck, thats a kickass guitar. Even more kickass if you get it fat strat.

Strats were made for blues, L.P.s were made for rock. eitherway, i'm saluting you.

I dunno if you're talking about Gibson or Epiphone, but my Epiphone LP Gothic is probably the lightest guitar i've ever held in my hands.

My old Samick used to be the lightest.....all my friends couldn't believe how light it is, but the Gothic is even lighter.....feels like nothing resting on your shoulder, basically just the strap.

Talking Thanks!

Thanks you guys all rock! I already knew that squires sucked. I'd have to agree with the whole strat=pop/punk. I'll have to save up for a while but I think I'll get a Les Paul Vodo, Gothic V, or an Ibanz.

Youl need a fat strat then The one with singlecoil picups won't do for metal.

Most jacksons aren't expensiver than strats...

1 word, jackson. you can get a good beginners one for 300. its hilarious cuz i think the neck on my jackson is literally half as thick as the one on my friends strat. and the more i play my jackson the more i suck with his strat.
