I've got my first gig in a couple of days and was just wondering whether anyone has any tips on playing live?

Don't stand still with the guitar! You will look like you're nervous. When you do the lead parts (if you're gonna do any) take a step forward or something, make the audience see that you're gonna do something. Also look at some conserts on video or something see how the professionals do it. Don't copy them just see what you think they do that looks good and do it yourself.

Tomb is right. Theres nothing more that bores me at a show as when the all just stand still. Get into it! Fuck image, be your self. Also make sure you have your chord taped to the back of your gutiar so you dont step on it. Put a new pair of strings on the day befoe the show, and theres things you can get for your strap that prevent it from falling off. There like 3 bucks so check those out. You wont to prevent everything because what ever can go wrong will go wrong. Most off, just have fun.

My advice is to try not to "perform", just play the music. If you start acting all crazy you might fuck up and end up looking even more stupid.

oh and put a reversed sticky thingy behind your guitar and stick picks there in case you drop one  (paul gilbert has some kind of sticky strap under his guitar, dunno if they sell those)

yeah, dropping picks suck. Put double sided tape on the edge of the body of your guitar and stick picks there (like Zakk Wylde) or do the Steve Vai style and have the tape on the edge of the headstock.
When you're on, get into the music...

straplocks god i love those before i got them i use to jam and my guitar would slip outa the strap abut thankfully i would catch it befor it hit the ground  but there worth the money

Just take it easy first of all, and be calm so you can perform best, being nervous = fuck up! Move around alot, make eye contact with some of the audience. Give off some good attitude too =). If you can , long hair head bang= cool.

I suggest really getting into your music as you play. Nothing pumps me up more than seeing people do that, especially in Metalcore.

maybe its just an old hxc saying, but not fucking up, isn't a concert, if a person goes to a concert, they wanna see energy, oh wow, your fucking up a bit, but your also giving more energy while doing it, if your jumping up and down and feeling the music, getting into, the crowd won't give a fuck if you miss a note, your still making equal. more energy = the ability to fuck up, just standing there and still fucking up = gay. well, just standing there = gay. which is why i don't think metallica would be so great live.

i remember being in a talent show once, i was like 12 or 13, on bass,
and we were playing paranoid by BS. (hah..BS  )
well, i never left the side of the amp, cause i was so nervous,
and i didn't move the whole song. i didn't screw up, but i bet the
audience knew i was nervous. so my advice is the same as everyone else
......MOVE. and if you can't play and headbang, then just pace back and forth
on the stage. it's better than just standing there.

LMAO yeh that should win the crowd for sure!  But yhe get thsoe dunlop strap locks. There really nice. If u get a pair for each guitar u only need one strap, cause then all u need to do is click the button and pop our coems the strap and just click it into the guitar u want to use.

Or you could get a Planet Waves strap with a lock clip thing built into it, it takes less thgan a second to take it off a guitar and put it on another one. Its great.

That is very good advice, try to keep that in mind when your trying to play the songs and entertain the audience at the same time.

Tips to prevent pick dropping
I'm sure most people know this but just in case...use Gorrilla Snot to prevent the pick from slipping. If you can't get ahold of Gorilla Snot, take a razor blade and make lines across your pick (make little diamond shapes) on both sides of the pick, it'll help a lot.

Ok, I see you are playing a power chord there so that gives away the fact you're playin' some rhythm shit. I can't tell what you're doing movement-wise from a picture but I'm thinkin' you need to bend your knees more when you play rhythm. Then do that stance there if you're soloing.
Watch some CoB videos and learn from Alexi. He keeps his legs apart and bends his knees then, since you have the hair, swing that shit around.
Why didn't you play with that Kelly?

half of us couldnt be fucked to dress up. I didnt use the kelly cos i prefer my axe. I was playin both rythm and lead dependin on wat song we were playin. anyway the gig kicked ass, we got a good review in the local paper and we got some money for it to spend on so it was worthwile.
