alexi used to use jacksons until his custom-made one got stolen and Jackson didnt wanna lend him a new one for the rest of the tour so he basically said fuck it and tried ESP AFAIK. |

This is probably a dumb question but how do they do those melodic cuts like in the sond "Downfall"? Are they scales, sweeps or what? If any one knows I'd appreciate the help.

Explain "cuts".....damn, this is kinda hard. Ok, in the song "Downfall", after the first part of the song, right before the keyboards start playing again, they play some really melodic sweep type thing that sounds really wierd. Also in the song "Everytime I Die" before the mellow riff starts they play the same type of thing. I don't know if that helps any...

yeah, im guessin you mean lead licks. It takes a good guitarist to write licks that are up to Children of Bodom standard. Im sure there are others here who will agree with me that Alexi Laiho is THE best metal guitarist ... may i even dare to say EVER. But if you want to start writing licks just use scales. just get fast at a couple of scales and integrate some of the patterns into your playing. mix up the notes aswell cos running up and down scales can get boring.

Yeah, I've been practicing new scales, I'm pretty good with them but I can't even try to follow the scales played by Alexi. I wrote a song the other day with a great solo, it sounds a little like CoB but not exactly. I used a lot of exotic scales and such. I've definately improved.

He can also play crazy scales very accurate and very fast....not to mention do lead vocals at the same time. The ONLY thing I don't like about him is that his tone is too EMGish. I'd prefer it if he used DiMarzio Evos or something. Oh, and he wears mascara.  |

Alexi Laiho rules, I seriously think he can be considered the best. I saw them live and they blew me away... he played that lead lick and sang at the same time during kissing the shadows. That takes co-ordi-frikkin-ation ... and thats just the guitar playing.

metal=life Alexi's sound is too EMGish, well that's because he uses a single EMG-HZ H4 (passive) and no tones whatsoever on the guitar. Personally, I really don't like his sound, although he has nice amps (he uses different amps all the time, Tech21 TM300, JCM 800...) And what comes to jackson, they dumped it completely and got 2 custom shop ESPs FREE-OF-CHARGE. damn, they cost nearly 5000 each, and he just gets them for free in a few months (unlike jackson which would have taken a year to get new ones).
btw, alexander kuoppala (rhythm guitarist) left the band, now there's temporarily playing Roope Latvala (a legend, former Stone guitarist, one of Alexi's idols, you don't know him, don't ask!) with a custom ESP Random Star

yeah i don't know about the "best" but cob is definately up there. lead guitar and vocals?? thats pretty amazing.... and just sweeps is pretty dismissive to say the least. he's got a lot soloing between sweeps alot of the times. and live sounds exactly like the cd. pretty amazing band.

Not to mention play live like a motherfucker! Shit, people who've not seen him close enough live don't even know, it's just incredible. Seeing him live really leaves no questions, the dude can play simply awesome rhytm and lead .... and sing at the same time. He's aggressive, but his playing is so precise, it's not fucking studio gimmickery. It's so easy to talk shit, but not too many can *really* write songs, play rhytm and lead and sing at the same time.

i always thought that ale used to play the melodies/leads/whatevers when alexi was singing, so i used to think of alexi as nothing more than an okay vocalist. but then i saw the live video of kissing the shadows...FUCK how does he do that??????????
