You need a speaker to make sound.

when i first saw an amp head, i used to think it was, or wondered atleast. Cause if you look at it, for example, a marshall head, the part where the marshall is, above all the knobs, kind of looks like a speaker for the sound to come out of.

We were all beginners at some point, so i understand your point of view...i think i may have thought something similar to that one time ago.
Anyways, if you're just starting out you should get a combo...don't buy the pieces seperately unless you're rich. But even then, some combos have awesome sound. (sometimes better than a head+stack set)

You can hook up your head to you computer but it'll sound like shit. At least you get some amplification though, right?

uhhh can you say extremely overpowered and blown sound card... i wouldnt suggest this at all... unless you are using a usb interface like the line 6 usb record port... but this is not a good idea. |

They only have the mesh bit to match the look of the head and the cab(s), I think. Which is good actually. Although you'll still get tons of folk cranking a Mesa/Boogie through a Marshall. Oh well...

Or seeing as to how most Marshall's are tube amps, maybe the mesh is to allow the tubes to breath? I don't have a tube amp, but don't the tubes get hot after a while?
Heh...Here's how little I know about tube amps...So I was at my local music store, and I was trying out the Jackson RR24 Randy V. I was plugged into a Peavy head. On the head, there were two switches, one saying "On/Standby" and the other saying "On/Off". Well, when I would switch guitars, I would flip the switch that read "On/Off" because I didn't know how long I was going to take to decide which guitar to try out next and I didn't want to waste power. After the 3rd time, the guy came up and was like "Yeah...Switch the On/Standby switch instead, you could blow a tube."

Head and stack?
And, is speaker cabinet just fancy talk for an amp? If so, then what's wrong with playing your electric guitar w/o an amp? I do that all the time. |

If the head has a DI out, then you can plug it into the mixer and run it out of the PA. This thread is indeed old, but those people were partially wrong.
