I'm New...
To guitars and this forum. Well, kind of new to guitars, I can read basic tabs and play Seven Nation Army, heh. I am planning to get a guitar & stuff soon, and take lessons over the summer. I was just wondering if any of you could give me some ideas of what good guitars, amps, and any other accessories I should get. I would also appreciate if anyone could tell me a couple easy songs to get me started, or tips or something.
Thanks in advance.

I almost deleted that post above because it is complete bullshit (opinion though, I know) . I have been taking lessons for 3 years (how long I have been playing) and I am better than all my friends that some have been playing for nearly 5 - 10. It all really depends though on your teacher. My teacher is into metal, really cool guy, and teaches you what you want to learn. Some teachers are old farts and teach you pointless shit that your never going to use, or don't want to learn at that moment. That is why most people get discorged with lessons and or the guitar is because of shitty teachers. Guitar.com has a search for metal teachers in certain areas which is great so you can pinpoint the teacher you want. BUT if you have extreme self-disipline and have a low budget then teach yourself. But teaching your self is hard because you don't know what to learn first (also the fact that there are SO many things in the guitar to learn). If your going to teach yourself there a series of books titled "fretboard logic" that are pretty resourceful. But a teacher is great because they can guide you. You can walk in and say "I want to shred like becker" then he can guide you to that path and show you what you need to know and exercises to help you get there.

Ah Well my friend who told me probaly had a teacher into some punk or something lol cause he said that when you teach yourself your not following any rules but oh well I taught myself and it was pretty easy cause alot of my friends would help me out. so I'd say ask friends to help if you don't wanna pay for lessons. but if you have no friends playing guitars maybe you should get lessons lol.

I taught myself and my friends helped me out and I can sitll play guitar really good Just because you never took lessons doesn't mean you can't play great either well I think maybe I did take lessons it depends does buying a Computer program called Guitar Coach like lessons? I bought that and learned some stuff from it but Before that I taught myself alot of stuff. But I learned alot more stuff from the program lol ah well If the program does count as taking elssons then Take them cuase wihtout the program I wouldn't be able to Trill,Vibrato,Slide,Hammer on and off, and lots of that good shit lol. But just because you don't take lessons doesn't mean you can't be good. Atleast I think so lol.

i think smells like teen spirit was the very first song i ever learned on guitar. Wait, no, Korn's "blind" was. I remember i was gonna do it for a talent show, tried out, never made it in. But its hella easy.

BAD IDEA! I have been playing for 2 years clueless until I took lessons. They are really good for you after you have gotten to know the guitar on your own (basic pentatonics, note names, alternate tunings, vibrato, bends, etc.) Lessons are very good to learn solo tips/methods

I'd say lessons depend on the teacher. I've got a friend who's been playing guitar for lets see.... 5 years. I started playing 3 years ago. I'm a lot better than he is, when it comes to metal stuff. Partially (I guess) because he doesn't listen as much to metal as I do, but also because he had a "classical" type teacher the first 3 years. If you can find a teacher who is into metal, or at least heavier type of rock and such, then go for it. If you can't, stay away and teach yourself. Just go look for tabs for your ten favourite songs (or if you're really just starting out, your ten favourite songs that sound easy) and then try. After you've done that, try again. And again, and again, and again.... You get the point. Don't give up, and you'll be fine. If you find something that you don't understand (like "pinch harmonic") search for it on google, or ask us.

if you're gonna take lessons, the best place to look for a teacher is probably going to your local music store, and looking at all the ads people put up. Just read all of them. Don't find the first metal teacher or so and be like, "yes, i'm going to him". And I never really believed in basing how good you should be in years. Cause gurra (not calling you out or anything on it, just using it as an example), lets say that guy who played 5 years played his guitar for about a half hour, but only on 3 days, out of a 7 day week. While you, on the other hand, who's more devoted, plays every night, for long periods of time. The more devoted one will always be better in the end, no matter how many years of playing. I beat an 8th grader in a bass competition to get into my middle school jazz band, back when i was in 6th grade. Just practice practice practice.

actually i'd also suggest the same.....without a teacher you're free to learn it whichever way you want to.........i'd anyday suggest a guide instead of a teacher...

yeah, that's right for the most part, but don't ask us how to do a pinch harmonic, there's a sticky thread right at the top!

You know what? I want you to come to Sweden. We can meet at the airport in Stockholm (the capitol of Sweden). Bring a big knife.....
What I'm trying to say is... Fuck me I'm stupid. I did actually not think of that. I usually play at least 2h a week, and sometimes up to 2h a day. He plays *max* 4h a week, usually far less. Please kill me.
On second thought though, I think I may be more devoted to my guitar playing because I have never seen it as any type of "school". I mean, I haven't been given homework. He has. That probably takes some of the fun out of it...
But still, please kill me.

Thanks for all the feedback, but I have another question, it's kinda dumb, but I'm new to guitars. I'm only 14, and I haven't really played guitar much, only my little brother's 1/2 size "Neon" guitar, and I find it extremely hard to play because it is so damn small, and his amp is really crappy. Should I buy a 3/4 or full size one? Or is 1/2 size right for me and I just suck at guitar?

full size. Any other size electric guitar, unless for travel, is stupid.
and g_urr_a-
its ok, i won't kill you, i'm used to haveing to tell alot of people this. And yeah, i never really dug lessons as much as i did learning on my own, mainly becuase your being TOLD to do something. But i'm still thinking of taking classical lessons or something.

Thanks artofnothing, but one more question, heh, sorry if it's annoying...
I can already play a few songs on my brother's small guitar...
"Seven Nation Army" - The White Stripes
"Enter Sandman (Intro)" - Metallica
"One (Intro)" - Metallica
"Blind (The Part After 'Are You Ready?')" - Korn
"Adam's Song (Intro)" - Blink 182
"Come As You Are (Intro)" - Nirvana
"Freak On A Leash (Intro)" - Korn
"Smoke On The Water (Intro) - Deep Purple
I can almost play the intro of Crazy Train...
I looked up tabs for "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana, since a few people said that it was easy, but I don't really understand the tabs. HERE is a link to the tabs...
I don't understand what to do for the X's...can anyone tell me what I am supposed to play?
Thanks in advance.

the Xs is just like, taking your finger, and just lifting it a bit off the string, but still on the string, like palm muting, only with your finger, on your left hand.
