need help with time signatures

i can count some shit out, but i cant say its "blah-blah-blah" time signature. how do these numbers tell wats happening? like i know 4/4 is the basic most comonly used timing right? but how do i tell wat others are. like if i make up a riff that counts as "1-2-3-4-1-2 1-2-3-4-1-2", what time signature is that? and so i know how to figure out all time signatures, i think i just need to know wat those numbers mean(4/4,1/4,etc). could anybody help a dumbass as dumb as me?

4/4 means that the drums n guitar meet every 4 beats, if u have something like 7/4 time they meet every 28 beats but im not sure how that works out

no it really doesn't

Best way is through example. 6/8 will have six beats in a measure. Best example: Nothing Else Matters (Metallica). The 8 in the signature means that the 8th note gets the beat (which really doesn't matter for your counting purposes, just know that you'll very rarely see 6/4.... as a rule, if it's got six beats to a measure like that, odds are very high you're talking about 6/8).

Others: 7/4. Download "Light Fuse and Get Away" by Dream Theater, and listen to the drum riff that repeats right after the chorus. This is the best example of a 7/4 beat I've yet heard. As you count out the 7 high hat hits, the bass falls on beats 4 and 5. Just listen and learn. If you don't get it, don't worry, it's not a highly common time sig. unless you're playing complex music. You'll probably understand it as your understanding of time signatures gets more advanced.

Hope this helps, if you need further help, just ask.

BTW... for a 1-2-3-4-1-2, you're probably talking about a fast 6/8 type thing.
