I just went to this massive Death Metal show yesterday, and all i saw was little 16 year olds running around drapped in black trying to look as "evil" as possible. It was so hilarious that it actually started pissing me off towards the end. What's the obsession with being so fucking evil?

Goddamn man, i went there wearing a black t-shirt with a right breast pocket, a green/blue plad long sleeve shirt over top, and a flannel jacket. My buddy dressed in similar apparel. Out of maybe 200 people, we were the only normally dressed guys there, and probably the most down to earth.....but at the same time we most likely knew 100 times more about anything music than any of these wannabe-evil-kids will ever know in a lifetime. It's pathetic.

The most common metal look (apart from all the faggy goths) here is the jeans and a band t-shirt look.

The thing that pisses me off about goths in relation to music, is the obsession with gore and evilness. I reckon one of the reasons that the new vital remains and slayer have done so well is the fact that it is plainly to do with evilness (the new vital remains also really kicks ass musically) deicide in general has evilness to them as well, and cannibal corpse (as well as numerous others) about gore. I want to see a band play real black metal and sing about loving god and bing nice to bunnies. That, i feel, will seperate the posers from the real metal heads.

Also we see a vein of evilness come into society in general, with all the constant shit shows and movies about vampires that are coming out these days, as well as the new wave of bloody movies.

As far as i am concerned the only way you can truely be seperate from general society, an "outcast" if you will, is if you are a die hard power metal fan.

The obsession with being noticed today is uncanny. Punks, goths, metalheads, freaks....whatever you want to call yourself, you're all attention craved fanatics. How about just being yourself?

And don't go saying having 26 peircings and chains connecting your ear to your nose and clit (or dick, depending on circumstances) is "yourself". Fuck that. Being yourself is when you wake up at 12:43pm on a saturday afternoon and you watch cartoons until 4pm in your pyjamas. It's not showering for 3 days and not caring what the fuck other people think. I'd be willing to say more than 3/4 of this board can fall into what i've just described. Not necessarily the full-blown hardcore attention freak, but to some extent anyways. All that matters to me is that i do what i have to do to pay the bills, keep my band going and avoid getting into car accidents.

(although not in those exact words ) But if you've ever felt the "need" to dress a certain way to go to a fucking metal show, or felt "man i'm going to the mall, better put my chains on so people will get annoyed when i walk by", then you are a perfect example of what i am currently bashing.

Let's not get carried away here either. I do shower everyday, and i try to look "presentable" when i go to work everyday.....but that's because if i don't, i could lose my job, along with all my money, my car, my everything. If any of you have jobs, you'll know what i mean. But to dress up to go to Harvey's? Or just to see Freddy vs Jason?? Or the "MUST WEAR BLACK!!!!!!!!" attitude i see EVERYWHERE at shows??? EVERYWHERE?!?!??! Come on. That's overdoing it.

So in conclusion, although these "goths" appear to be part of some new "trendy" thing, they aren't the only ones starving for attention. I'd be willing to bet about 90% of metalheads ranging from 13-18 years old are part of this hungry mob just as well.

I stopped caring last year when i realized that same thing. I am who i am. i wear band t's when not in uniform(i'll explain in the RTT thread if someone asks.) I dont listen to all that gothic bullshit, and the popular music; excluding a few of the lighter bands that i enjoy.

I've been a non-conformist for almost all my life and most of you know I've been around a long time. I dressed grunge back in the mid-70's cuz it was comfortable to me. Only I had my horses then so I almost always wore my boots. If I could have found white ones to wear to graduation (we had to wear white shoes) I would have. That was a comfort thing though. I had a black girl I didn't know ask me why I wore them all the time. I told her they were comfortable. Her little clique never said another word about them after that.

Once in awhile I'd have the black and lace look that they call Goth now if I felt down and depressed. Boyfriends problems and stuff like that. I 'd get asked if I was going to a funeral. I had one outfit that was sort of 'disco-ish' , but not very, and more people asked me what was up with that because they knew it wasn't me. I had cool suspenders that were white with red stripes and blue stars I wore with my jeans and blue satin top. I sewed a lot of my own clothes back then just so I wouldn't look like everyone else. Satins, velvets, upholstery, I even made a 60's style purse of suede cuz I couldn't find one and I loved fringe. That thing wore like iron , too.

There was a girl who lived in New York for awhile that was into Bowie. She looked like him and dressed like him. I used her shoes in a song once. SHe had a pair of lucite ones with goldfish in them. But we all called her Martian Lady back then cuz the first time we saw her was the day they said little green men had landed in Arizona. I never talked to her, but she was an art student and sang in the talent show with her b/f who also looked like her. I don't think anyone else in the whole school was into Bowie.(Ziggy Stardust phase) I wasn't familiar with whatever songs they did, and I couldn't tell you what they were now. But I do remember there was a lot of boo-ing going on when they were on stage. Not me, but lots of others. Rock was hot then and disco was just beginning. They weren't ready for Bowie.

I held on to my hippie-ness then and never really strayed from it, but I can dress to the 9's if I need to. I always have a little something to make the outfit unique though. But I no longer have my cowboy boots. Wally and his brother wore my last pair to play in when they were little.

Well Ionly wear one pair of PVC trousers all the time, they cost £50 but I have had them for ages tehy last a long time, and you don't need to wash them because they wipe clean. So it is conveinient when you a lasy git like me lolol. and New rocks they cost me £160 but again they last a long time, and are more versatile in that you can wear them anywhere. However if you wore trainers to a gig, well most people trainers with the laces undone so as to be 'cool', I use the term loosely they would fall off in the pit.
