What`s the REAL diffrence between 6 and 7 strings?

(I`m playing death metal tuned to B (2.5 steps down).

I`m tuned to C#, and I`m thinking about tuning to B, but I have problems with strings (13-56).

I thought that sevenstrings are great for tunings like B, but Erik Rutan from Hate Eternal for example plays in B on "King of all kings" and uses 6 strings B.C.rich. So?

I bought seven string few days ago, and I`m little confused . I thought that I will have one extra bass string (6strings tuned to B and this 7 string in something hehe), but it remains, that for example I`m in B so the rest 6 strings are in E (so the extra string is the violin one). Blaaaah... I`m really fucked up now with this problem

What`s the shit with this guitar? Low tunings? You can tune your 6 string to B or A (like Nile) and be happy.

Ibanez for example made people think that their sevenstrings are great for low tuned music, but it looks, that you have one extra violin string for solos.... so where`s this fucking "good for low tuning" ?

The advantage of tuning down on a 6-string as opposed to playing a 7-string is when you tune down the strings are really lose, and so you can play faster and string bends are easier and crap. Keep the 6-string man.

7 strings are meant to be tuned BEADGBE... a six string with a low B added on to the bottom. If you want, you can drop the B to an A...

It sounds like you want to tune it to GBEADGB? What's your six string tuned to right now?

That will also blow your tone to shit. Medium tension on the strings will sound decent, high tention will sound slightly better, but if you loosen them enough that they're flopping around, your tone will go to hell so fast you won't even see it leave.

I want to play in B (I`m the only guitarplayer in my band now, and when I heard new Hate Eternal and so photos of Erik (without second guitarist I stard to think about all this 7 string thingies). In Morbid Angel ther often play 7 strings, but like I wrote before, in HE Erik is playing 6 string instead of 7, but he`s tuned to B... so? I don`t really understand this whole talking about seven strings.... like I wrote before.. I looks like it has a one extra violin.... hm... I`m total noob in this things... I used to play and don`t think alot about this .. but now I want to know, what`s the truth

Well... if you're playing a 6-string, and have it tuned to C or C#, your tuning is (I assume): CFBbEbGC, or something like that. At this point, your highest string is the C, so a shift to a 7-string would put you in BEADGBE, which for you, really only adds a "violin string" (I assume you're talking about unwound strings, like the normal G, B and E strings of a 6-string). For people who don't downtune, the 7-string tuning adds a low B.

What's the advantage? Versatility in your playing. Do you want to go below B? Or are you going to use the high E? If not, there's really no reason to pick up a 7-string guitar.

What should I do with this?

If your strings are too loose, try using a higher guage of string. You will have the pitch you want at a higher tension (so they won't be lying on the board). What size were on there when it was tuned to C?

I`m using Ernie Ball 13-56. In C they were just fine....

The way i see it, the only people who NEED a 7-string guitar are lead guitar players, guys who have REAL talent and can successfully go from low-B to high-e and back again without fucking up.

Bands like Korn and whoever else that made 7-strings popular did it for image. Those bands never use more than 2 strings anyway, so they'd be fine with a 6 string...problem for them is figuring out how to tune down a 6 string.

But bands like Morbid Angel are talented, and i'm sure that Trey Azagtoth (whatever) used all his 7 strings to their fullest (you can hear it and even see it in videos and live shows). That's what the seventh string is for, to give you a lower sound without taking away from the high lead sounds bands use in solos.

Tune a 6-string down and you lose 5 notes......might not sound like much, but it is to someone who can use them well.


So, if you want to be "cool" and "radical", get a 7-string.....if you're a genious at guitar, get a 7-string......if you're like me and you're a riff man, keep the 6.

Tunning low requires very heavy gauge strings.

Try looking for some Zack Wylde 13-60 strings or something......might be even heavier than that, like 13-62. (not recommened if you stay in standard....they'll be so tight you won't be able to bend shit)
