both growls and clean vocals : mikael ackerfeldt (i really dug when he was doing vocals for katatonia, and he is amazing in opeth), jonas renkse (of course it's obvious, my favourite band being katatonia  ). they both write really good lyrics as well.
i also like petri eskelinen from rapture, he's mainly a growler...about black metal: nocturno culto from darkthrone and host from taake.
(and from estonia's scene: anders from forgotten sunrise (i preferred the older, atmospheric death metal stuff, but he's vocals are nevertheless great) and alan from kalm and vaikus (sadly he got killed in an car accident, his demise left a big gap in the scene)
the list could go on, but those are first to come in mind.

And that Mick Thompson does solos. I also read in a Mag with
a cd with him soloing and he said that he had his bassist

Chuck Billy is an amazinf vocalist, only album I know he sings on though is Testament - The Gathering.
He rocks thought can go from cleanto brutal and right back no problem, and he does each style perfectly.

Depends on what your looking for in "vocals".
For clean, go with ozzy osbourne or bruce dickinson, and mikael åkerfeldr of opeth he has beautiful clean vocals as well as insane growls.
for best death/grind vocals well alot sounds the same hahaha, but you could listen for a twin vocal attack which the berzerker pulls off EXTREMELY well, but also dying fetus. then for single singers, matt chalk of australia's psycroptic is a PHENOMENAL death metal vocalist with a good range.
for pure spine-tingling and gut-churning screams, listen to count grishnack (burzum), also bethlehem, and marco kerhen (deinonychus).
for any other things which i cant be fucked to put into categories, listen to tomas lindberg of at the gates + a few other bands, chuck billy of testament, marco aro of the haunted, maniac of mayhem, jason healey of atomizer, jon nödtveidt of dissection etc, tom araya, early philip anselmo, and speed strid of terror 2000/soilwork.

oh a couple i left out:
i am very disappointed. nobody has mentioned devin townsend yet! course the lyrics on SYL (only strapping young lad ive heard) are quite weird but he is definitely one of the better vocalists in metal music.
also, lef jensen of dew-scented, thats the kind of stuff i will turn up loud so the whole house can hear it, and that i am PROUD to have that stuff to do it with. and as has been mentioned before, seth putnam of A.C |

david vincent - old morbid angel
he had sort of a perfect voice for them. It was really clean and crisp sounding. With domination and entangled in chaos, he started losing that sound though.

Decapitated has got one of the greatest vocalist I've heard, with a nice accent also

the best vocals...daniel conchado (in times of incantation)craig pillard,matti(cinerary,liturgy) brodequin singer,devourtment first singer,glen benton,frank mullen.
black metal:
dodheimsgard,bestial warlust,dark throne,satyricon and old bathory
doom metal:
the novembre ones,the saturnus one and the godsend ones
the fermento ones now are one of the most versatile voice in the scene (akerkocke sings brutal and black ,fermento ones too..)

I like the guy from black dahlia murder, you can understand what he is saying pretty well, and he does both high and low vocals which i like. Im more into melodic metal other than that so i like the guy from dark tranquillity too. Alexi from COB is pretty awesome too.
