ummm... no.
Line out will never power a cab. If you want, you can use the preamp out, run that into a power amp, then that into a cab.
Or, as the AVT100 has, you can use the speaker outputs which are designed to power cabs. The Marshall AVT series is one of the only lines that I've seen use this for combos, and I'd put money on the fact that this is what your friend was using.
Anyway, wattage really doesn't matter. A 100 watt amp will only be twice as powerful as a 10 watt amp, and if you need more volume, increasing wattage is not the way to do it. On the other hand, 4 12" speakers will move more air, and will increase your SPL (sound pressure level), and will expand your sound much more.
