Anyone explaining some Amp vocab??
Hi
I play guitar for a while now, and I recently joined a band.
Now, my gear is:
Jackson Kelly, Boss GT-6 and a Peavey Transtube Studio 112 65 watts.
So I kind of need a new amp (at least 100 watts) to rehearse and play small gigs.
Anyway, I can play the guitar pretty well, but I don't know a thing about
amp stuff.
What exactly is a head, stack, combo, tube, ...???
And what do you think is best to perform live?
(mind you my budget is not small but not veeeery high either)...
Thanks!

Head = amplifier top, the thing on top of your speaker cabinet
Stack = the top and speaker cabinet together
Combo = a combo amp, its a cabinet with a build in guitar amp, so its an amplifier, that is head and cabinet in one. (so not the seperate top/head or speaker cabs)
Tube = generates the sound of the amp, eh, there's two type, SS (Solid State) with is non-tube, and has different sound charactistics.
Tube amps sound more warm in general and most of them have a better sound then Solid States or Tube-pre-amped amplifiers.
Best to perform live with is obviously a stack, a good speaker cabinet with a top which packs a punch is a good combination for live shredding
hope this answers your questions.

With a thing like the GT-6, is it neccassary to have anything more than a cabinet?

Yea, the GT-6 has a pre-amp, but its not a power amp.
so there's not enough power in it to run it directly into speakers, and it won't sound too well. hook it up to a nice tube amp and you're set

Is there any option to using a complete amp? Like separately sold power amps, or something?
I'm thinking about buying a GT6 some day, but I don't want to buy an amp (and I don't have one now, as I use my comp as a practice amp).

Hey, indeed, too bad the GT6 isn't made for that....;
I heard heads cost aaaa lot (I hope I'm wrong )
but that speakers cost not very much (but yeah you can't use em without a head, lol)

Yes, heads do cost a lot of money, only crappy ones are cheap.
if you're serious about playing and stuff, its worth the money, good heads are expensive, good cabinets too, they aren't cheap either.
the GT-6 has a headphones out G_urr_A, you can hook up computer speakers to it or just headphones... crappy sound though
