I mean the standard tuning, why is it like that? Why if every string is tuned to the 3 rd higher note that its string right above it, the 2nd string is tuned to the 2nd note higher than the 3rd?

If the answer is to play the chords, What would be the problem with having a C instead of a B in the 2nd string and of course an F instead of the high E on the first to keep up with the 3rd higher note thing? I mean from the beginning so that everybody learned to play like that.

everything's a perfect fourth away from the rest, except the g-b shift. This is most likely so that the whole system creates the octave e strings (it's a 2-octave diff., really). Someone probably screwed around a long time ago, found something that worked, and spread it... placing F and C on the top two strings will create some very interesting chord positions. Most people aren't willing to adapt all their scales and chords to it.
