If you want brutal as in powerful, then go for something like G (my guitar can handle that, on 9-42 strings (i think that's the gauges i'm using)).

I always play in standard or drop D. There is nothing wrong with drop tuning. I would venture to say that most people who question someones ability because of what tuning they use are either close minded or havent really researched the history of dropped tuning. Players have been using it for years. Dont only associate it with only Staind or other NuMetal bands, which is where it really got its spotlight. Its just an alternate tuning...thats all. Thats the beauty of the guitar...you can make it your bitch in order to get the sound you want. Standard tuning is great, but dont let it become a box.

P.S. I wont go a defense spree of Mike Mushok, cause Im sure that there are guys out there who kill for less, but keep this in mind...he was a student of Tony McAlpine ( I sure hope you all know who Tony is), a student who would set back to back with his teacher and trade blistering improvised leads for prolonged periods of time. Just because he is at the front of NuMetal and people dont like him because he focuses on a commercialized sound doesnt mean he doesnt have skill, it just means he is into something different, like making some money off of his music. No, I dont really like Staind.
