Improvising other people's songs

Hey, im a newb, and ive been playing guitar for a year and a half now. I've been working my ass of on guitar, practicing on an acoustic and a cheap electric with high action. I can't get a job, so i cant get money to afford better guitar yet. But, my question and the point of subject is, When u play other bands songs, do u try to play it note for note, or add some shit to make it ur own. See, after I learned some slayer songs, black label society, pantera songs, and cannibal corpse songs, after I learne them, when i would play them for friends, i would turn the stereo on, then my amp on and play over the stereo. And sometimes, when i play other bands songs, i add my own little things like, improvising and stuff. Like, when I play "Bleed for Me" by BLS, during the first verse, i add a couple of Pinch Harmonics (in true zakk wylde fashion), or during Cannibal songs like Meat Hook Sodomy, during some moments of silence, i add slides or little leads. On slayer songs like "Mandatory SUicide" i kick on my wah pedal, and fuck with that for the solo and stuff. I try and hit the major notes of the solo, but i tend to do my own thing. and i was just wondering if that was cool, or if i did this live, would i get bottles of piss thrown at me. Any way, if u read that all, u have my respect. thanks for the time man, KEEP IT HEAVY MOTHERFUCKERS

if your just doing it on your own in your area of your own little confinement, it isn't a problem at all, but when playing it live, don't tend to add to much, make sure they can hear it and recognize it.

Well ive heard a lot of slayer songs live, and they tend to completely change there solos most of the time, but like you said leaving the major notes in it

I know this is completely different, but The RHCP change there solos live each tour, for each song, its dissapointing, cos when ur there, ur like...ohhhh!! ohhh!!, theres a solo coming, and ur about to humm the notes when its changed by the guitarist

K, thanks guys. Yeah, like I said, i play the majority of the song the right way, just random pinch harmonics or wah pedal things once in a while. During solo's, I hit the right notes, but i throw in the Whammy Bar, or some other things of my own in it for fun. thanks guys.

I think it's better than just playing a straight cover, that's boring.
