Other than websites, there are some books you can invest in like (for example) "Progressive Heavy Metal." They come with CD's. I have a couple of them, one for rythm, the other for lead. You can also learn the way I did: play along with your favorite band. I started by playing Hypocrisy and Cannibal Corpse. Develop your own style and good luck.

screw lessons, they stunt your growth as a guitarist. teach yourself until you get a sense of your own style then take lessons. preferably from the internet or good friends who are good at guitar

They didn't stunt shit.
I've been playing guitar for 4 years and I can shred like a motherfucking cat on crystal meth.
Anyways, metal- learn harmonic minor and the diminished scales..
Then integrate that into your riffs..
Actually, most metal that you listen to is all part of the major scale.. Take Children of Bodom for example.. their licks and riffs and solos are all apart of the major scale..
But for metal, learn the Phrygian (and Phygian Dominant) mode and inversions and Locrian Mode and Inversions..
You can use Aeolian mode, but it might not sound as heavy as you want it..

..and where do you think the minor scale comes from?
Minor scale is a mode in the major scale.
also, if you didn't know- Dorian and Phrygian are minor modes.
Major Scale is the base for ALL the minor modes.
then you may have variations of each mode.
and actually.. very rarely are metal songs ever in major modes.
You are partially correct sir, but you must realize that Minor = Major. The only difference is the note you start and finish on.
A minor = A B C D E F G A
C major = C D E F G A B C
..perhaps it is a coincidence?
