Thumbs up Tapping On The Bass

Ive only recently just discovered this new technique and im coming more attracted to it each time i pick up my bass, when composing songs, and adding a bass solo, I usually add the odd Tap Lick..im wondering how many of you bassists out there Tap, or can tap..if so how do you pick up the technique?

More importantly can you Double hand tap, where both of your hands fret the strings at the same time? I havent tryed it that much yet, but i think i might need a better bass with better pickups to do it, and lowered strings

I know that The following bassists using tapping in there soloing and riffs- Victor wooten, Les Claypool (Primus), Jon Myung( Dream Theater)

If some of you have heard of ''The Stick'' its like a big long fretboard with like a big pickup at the bottom of it, its got lots of strings, Its used for double hand fretting, and its amazing, they cost over 1200 quid, 2400 dollars, http://www.stick.com they have some methods there, that are just amazing..

Anyway if any of you play the tapping technique, thats cool keep going, if your new to it, and want to know more, just look for bass tapping techniques, or pick it up from the guitar technique, there the same thing

If you know any individual songs that the bassist (or bass soloist) performs some tapping skills in them, post them (The name of it or if generous enough post an mp3)

I will try and get some up.

Cheers - Happy Tapping!

Download the Bass Solo track on Joe Satriani's Live in San Francisco. Stu Hamm uses a shitload of tapping, so finding stuff by him will do you good. He has also made instructional videos and such, maybe you could find them, too.

I can double hand tap somewhat, but not very quickly.

i use tapping a lot on my fretless, thats the only one of my basses where the strings are low enough to do that anyway. i picked up that technique by watchin the guitarreros in my band...i jus wondered how that would sound on a bass, so i tried it

as for the sticks, they are amazing, truly beautiful. if i ever have the money left i would think about buying one. i heard that there will be a german music store selling these here, so i will get a chance of playing one of them hopefully..

and Hamm is also the man i would consider tap king of bass

Yeah i picked it up from the guitarists in my bands, Just the single note tapping like hammering on from the left hand and after the hammer on hitting a higher note

etc

G|-----12h14-----15--------|
D|-----------------------------|
A|-----------------------------|
E|-----------------------------|
FP T

Fp = finger
T = tap with right hand

Obviously thats the beginner tapping area's

The pro/expert tapping comes in like this

Try and do this at 215 Bpm
-

I had to attach it because this font is terrible for tabbing out stuff.

And in a ''Jaywalk music shop'' quite close to me, about a 15 minute drive. they sell sticks..i never touched one though, just looked and gawped and drooled..

But ive seen all the videos of guys playing these beautiful instruments, amazing sounding things, i just wanna fiddle..But if i break it i pay..and im a bit clumsy, hehe

Ah well i just need the cash!

nice line, i'll try that and see how it works on my fretless.

what i like bout tapping on fretless (and playing fl generally) is, u can very easily create broad, atmospheric sounds, add some chorus or flanger and ur the man
a good mixture of tapping and sliding is really good if u want every1 to listen to your playing and forget bout the guitarmen

and man i have the stick media player file runnin over and over here
i really have to get my hands one one of those

Yeah the media files examples, the second one kicks ass with the solo at the end, that guy rules!! i need to play one.

Thing is you watch that sample, and then you turn around and look at your bass at think...hmmmmm...Your not as good as that 18 string thing!!! ...But maybe we can perform the same actions on you..hehe

Yeah!! i think fretless is what i need when im starting my tapping career, in creating tapping lines

Check out ''Primus - Jerry was a racecar driver''

The intro on that is a tapping intro, its catchy and technical, give it a try!!

Edit: Here is the tab for it, its for a 6 string though, i think there are some tabs re-arranged for a 4 string, though i remember you saying you owned a 6 string

i surfed the Stick site yesterday when i read the first posts in the "unique basses" thread. i really wonder how these things feel and if u can get "metal" out of it, if u know what i mean, it would sure look cool on a deathmetal band stage

and primus is seriously giving me the creeps sometimes. awesome i'll have a look at the song u recommended and give it a try.

imho a fretless is way more rewarding and forgiving when it comes to tapping. u have to play quite clean and exactly on a fretted bass or it will sure sound shitty. if u miss your notes on a fretless u can just do a quick slide or power chord and only other musicinas will notice u f*cked up there

Well i cranked a Zoom 607 bass pedal and have tried tapping on a distorted sound

In my verdict it doesent sound too bad, sounds a bit like a guitar tho, but i appreciate it - in some way.

I'm sorry there, misunderstanding due to bad english on my side, it's not my mothertounge so have mercy

what i wanted to say was..err..yeah u have to tap your notes exactly, we all know what happens if u re playing ur fretted bass and u just slide a lil too high or low

tapping usually means slow "ring time" so your sound will be affected by how exactly u hit the correct spot on your board. with fl that won't be a problem, because u can easily correct if u are not hittin the right spot by sliding up or down the few centimeters (sry whats smaller than inch? small inch? dunno sorry ) or you even don't need to correct anything due to the warm, broad sound that comes with most fretless, it is hard to tell if u played the correct notes anyway

actually i like playing with fx a lot while tapping. my usual bass sound is slightly distorted and nothing more. but as i mentionend earlier, while tapping i use all kinda fx, more distortion, flanger, chorus etc. tapping with a huge delay is quite fun btw

and thx for the tab m8...that sure looks like a lot of work for tomorrow evening

wooooh

nice, a descent thread again

yeah, I do tapping stuff on bass, try stu hamm's quahogs anyone part I and II!!!

that site your linked is pretty neat tatter3d!!!

tapping with my boss odb3 distortion pedal gets a really crunchy sound, its neat, but tapping on a bass clean, is the best, it's really great to punch in a short tapping line in a short solo !
