Chelsea Wolfe
Her new album Ἀποκάλυψις (Apokalypsis) is easily one of my favorite album of 2011. For anyone unfamiliar with her its really gloomy, dark, low-fi, sullen, yet beautiful doom-folkish stuff.
When I heard her first album I was immediately reminded of old school black metal (though it is not metal at all) and found out later that she has covered a Burzum song so the connection was definitely there.
Check this shit.

Fuck, Dyldo. I don't know if I'm not high enough, but that did NOT grab my testes in the fun way.
I know what usually works in these situations - listening to it again, in a while.
THEN WE WILL FIND OUT IF YOU SO CLEVAR

I hate women who sing like this woman sings. The nose, albeit connected to the throat, and by extension, the diaphragm, is not the proper orifice to release various sonic pitches of air.
I'll stick to Kate Bush.

WELL FUCK YOU BOTH!
I love her voice and the slightly distorted singing-through-a-stomp-box sound. It gives it that "necro" feel (I can't believe I just typed that). However, to be honest, when "indie" bands go for that sound I fucking hate it so much I could punch baby Jebus. In this context, though, its awesome.
She's also not singing through her nose.

She is very hyped right now in NYC and while I really want to like her and even dig her aesthetic I just don't find the music engaging. I feel like I'm missing something? Mer seemed so boring and uninspired to me. Her voice reminds me of Portishead's vocalist, but less daring. She also reminds me of Zola Jesus. I know she is going for the droned out, slow, doomy sound but it's just not working for me. It's missing something.

I think Mer is one of my least favorite tracks on the album as it is an underwhelming start. I think tracks like Demon, Moses, and Movie Screen have a much more satisfying, engaging, quite scream about them.
I've also noticed that she's been getting a lot of press in the bigger cities and this both surprises and pleases me. The former because its definitly a lot darker than a lot of this sunshine, reverb-ladden indie shit that's infecting all the FM from college radio stations to KROQ and the latter because I think she's a breath of fresh air deserving of the attention as she's established her own sound and doesn't seem to be riding on the coattails of any other artist.
Glad you dig, Wolfy.

I know this is quite a bit late, but I generally love this album, too.
I say generally because sometimes I'm just not in the mood for all the songs, but a few of them are pretty awesome. Pale on Pale being one of them.
As was mentioned, she did a cover of Black Spell of Destruction, and that's how I discovered her. I actually liked it for what it was, even though I much prefer the original.

Was planning on seeing her tonight but it fucking sold out, which I was NOT expecting. She's excellent live.
