Capricorns and Behold... the Arctopus are pretty good, as are Red Sparowes, Dysrhythmia and Grails although the latter triumverate are more like progressive rock with metal influences or parts.

Everything that John said is fantastic, most notably Behold... the Arctopus and Dysrhythmia, though they're more "intense". Zevious is another great instrumental band to check out (has the drummer from Dysrhythmia in it, check out this live version of "Coma Cluster") if you're into crazy jazz kind of stuff. I got the pleasure of having a couple beers with them a few months ago in LA.

I've got some more to throw out I'm sure when I can take a look at my CDs. For some reason the shit I recalled off the top of my head was more sullen, relaxed stuff.

I know I mentioned this a long time ago, but I do have a live set sitting in a VHS that I totally need to digitally convert, along with two studio unreleased tracks. I will do it some day. I've been throwing around the idea of re-mastering the Synergist demo and pressing a couple hundred copies but, who knows. Also worth mentioning is that the new Deadhead Roses album that'll be done in a few weeks has the keyboardist from Synergist in it now.

Haha, fucking awesome subject. I've been goofing around with my thrash/speed type stuff and compiled two instrumental thrash CDs. I've been rummaging through my death metal to do the same with that subgenre, but there isn't as much instrumental death metal, it seems. Gorguts had some great instrumentals, though. If anyone has any instrumental DM recommendations, send them this way.

I would also highly recommend you to check out Blotted Science. They are an excellent, avant-garde extreme metal band and 100% of their work is purely instrumental. The founding and stable members and primary songwriters are Ron Jarzombek (Watchtower, Spastic Ink) and Alex Webster (Cannibal Corpse). It's really kind of an instrumental supergroup with revolving drummers. It's some of the best metal I've ever heard in my life and, despite being highly technical and borderline death metal, it's very accessible and can be enjoyed by non-metal fans.

Also the Nefas - Seven Times Seven album. Ffffffffffffùcked up shit. No note is played for longer than 0.667 seconds and then doesn't come back for 5 minutes. Swirling fucked up shit right there and there's vocals but the instruments just take up so much attention this album is physically draining to listen to holy fucking sssssssssssssssssssshhhitttt.


Also Chris maybe you'd like Ulcerate (NO YOU WILL ALL LIKE ULCERATE). It ain't exactly instrumental but it IS all about the instruments and the vocals are there for like what, 10% of the time or some shit.

I never got Arghoslent, honestly. It just sounds like some kids from Virginia trying to rehash the Gothenburg sound that I never liked in the first place about 10 years too late for it to be original or interesting in any way. Beyond that, they don't employ any particularly odd or interesting scales, chords, structures, time sigs, or tempo shifts to at least make their music different. Their music has a very hollow, disconnected, unfeeling air to it, almost though it it's entirely disingenuous. I honestly feel as though they've simply co-opted an aesthetic they don't truly feel or even appreciate in order to push their ideological agenda onto a crowd more willing to receive it than some others.

Maybe I'm just biased as a half niggard when it comes to shit like this, but since my favorite band on this planet are Morbid Angel, I tend to think I can let shit like this go when the music is actually good.

Digging the Ulcerate so far, though... I hear hints of Immolation and Gorguts at times, but they have a very interesting and original outlook on songwriting that is refreshing for sure.
