Pushing the envelope
What bands would you guys consider to be moving forward and creating new forms of music? Cynic, Death, and Atheist are all bands from the past who created somewhat futuristic music. I'm just looking for some modern bands who are doing the same thing.

I think Red Chord have a very unique approach to metal and songwriting in general. It's very different and I like it.
I also think Morbid Angel are still avant-garde, consistently pushing the envelope within the DM subgenre. Well, at least they were 8 fucking years ago. We'll have to see when they finally release their supposedly finished next album how they've held up. I'm definitely looking forward to it, though. In fact, I've BEEN looking forward to it for EIGHT FUCKING YEARS.
You're probably already familiar with MA, so I'm probably not helping you much here, just adding my two cents. Definitely check out Red Chord if you haven't heard them yet, though.

Yeah they seem to walk the fine line between technicality and catchiness (relatively) that i've been looking for.
Chris - I have their album "Fed Through The Teeth Machine" and didn't really think a whole lot of it. Then again, I probably haven't listened to it enough.
