Guitar Pro 6

It was finally released a few days ago, there's a free trial on the main website.

I'm not going to upgrade, at least not for a long time. I dislike pretty much everything about the new version, and users of 5.2 or earlier will have to re-learn most of what they know about using the software. On top of that, there are now more restrictions on how you can manipulate the tab (can't create customised bends and whammy articulations, can't use MIDI and RSE at the same time, etc.), entering drum tab is an even more laborious task than it was before and the new RSE is only marginally better than that of version 5.

Fucking disappointing to say the least; been waiting for this for about 3 years.

If it's crap, trash it, but don't fix what's not broken. Just thrash on instead. Badam zing.
Personally I don't see the point of releasing a whole new version. I mean, GP5 has just about everything you could reasonably want out of that type of software, complete with a totally random French error message popping up now and again for no very intelligent reason. But, maybe they feel the need for a brand new product to open up new markets, who knows. Can't say I give a shit about it either way.

GP5 is good enough for me. If anything, I wish someone would upgrade PowerTab. It's much more lightweight than GP, but there are so many weird little random fuckups.

Haven't tried GP6 yet and don't intend to.

I've heard of a few independent programmers who've taken it upon themselves to develop Power Tab 2.0 rather than waiting for Brad Larsen to do it, but there's scant information about these projects at the moment. I've attempted to transfer my tabs into the current version of Power Tab, so that more users could bask in the glowing shining light of awesomeness that they are, but I always give up after about 10 minutes; I just find the interface to be unforgiving.

GP is the one I feel most comfortable with, although the first tab program I ever heard of or tried out was TablEdit. When I first discovered it my cock was awash with effervescent joy-globules, because I didn't even know such programs existed! I soon discovered that TablEdit was probably the shittiest tab editor on the market, though.

I'll be sticking with GP5 for the foreseeable future. I might revisit GP6 after the first or second incremental version is released (6.1 or whatever).

I actually started with a program called RandyTab. It was pretty great considering I had never seen a program like it before, but it's basically a poor man's PowerTab. Since you don't like PowerTab, I guess you would have hated it. I actually prefer the interface of PowerTab to GuitarPro, but GP5 beats PTEditor badly vis a vis actual functionality. I vaguely remember trying TablEdit out of curiosity, but I was already accustomed to PT and, thus, laughed upon using it. I was only curious because GP had a list of files it could import and TablEdit files was one of them.

RandyTab sounds familiar, I may have dabbled with it at some stage. I think I also used Bucket o' Tab at one point, but I don't think it even supported MIDI playback so it seemed pointless to stick with it when I had access to GP.

I forgot that GP can import TablEdit tabs! It can import Power Tabs too, I see. I wish it could export to Power Tab, that'd be handy. GP6 currently doesn't even let you export to GP5/GP4 format, but I think they're planning to implement this feature in future.

I never found a working version of Bucket o' Tab back when it was still in use. For some strange reason, I named my tab folder in my docs Bucket o' Tab. I really don't know why. It's not the tabs I've downloaded, just the stuff I've personally tabbed out. The stuff I've downloaded is in a folder creatively named Tabs. I'm fucking brilliant.

Cracking GP6 is way more complicated than cracking GP5 or earlier, so a User ID won't help. You have to download the massive RSE2 banks via BitTorrent and make alterations to your network card's settings and MAC addresses, as well as fuck around with the program files themselves, and then use a dedicated "loader" to start the program each time. There's a lot of downloading and tweaking involved. I have no intention of upgrading anyway, but if I did I'd probably just buy it. It would make sense to buy it if you're a heavy user of the program, especially when updates are being released much more regularly than normal (thus rendering new tabs useless for users of an older version).

If you are just opening tabs to learn from (as opposed to transcribing your own) you can wait for the upcoming release of an official "Guitar Pro Viewer" program. It'll be free, and will grant access to GP tabs for everyone. I doubt the RSE will be included, though.
