For some reason maths just doesn't agree with me, at all. I can't even do basic long division or multiplication, at least not in my head and not in a timely fashion. After 5 seconds of trying to work out a sum my brain hardens and I become profoundly depressed. I'm not exaggerating but an average 8-year-old could probably run rings around me in a math-off, which I'm constantly praying to God never happens.

I'd like to improve my abilities but starting from the very bottom - which is what would be required - is just too daunting and soul-crushing a task to take on. So I'll just let calc.exe take care of my shits for me until they invent Matrix-like knowledge installations which slot directly into the brain.

Math improved for me after 40. I don't know why. And lately just remembering numbers is better. All that algebraic stuff in high school made me crazy. i never did the hang of any of that, but probably because I never figured I use it. And you know when I saw my old teacher many years later and told her that she asked me if I ever used it. I told her no and she said then who cares? And she laughed about it!

As free flowing as this place is I don't see where it would make a difference. I certainly don't - and for "don't" read can't - do long division in my head and haven't been able to do so since I was around 9 years old. I always remember finding algebraic long division easier than the arithmetic version for reasons unfathomable to me, although I haven't had to do this since university.

As for the "step-by-step" approach to mathematics, it would be nice if it was like this in reality but hard and fast rules very rarely apply in anything more complex than very basic calculus. The trick is knowing when each rule needs to be employed which, I'm sure you've already realized, isn't an easy task at all!

To me, that's incredibly and needlessly complicated, and trying to remember all of these little acronyms and mnemonics is just far too bothersome for my simple, starchy brain. I always hated when teachers would explain problem solving in terms of rhymes and tricks - I wanted to know how to do it "dry" (oo err!) and I never felt that I really understood what was happening with the numbers when I used these little tricks. I think that's one of the things that made maths so hard for me.
