Tremolo may also be nice if you play solo's
Take a wah, Tremolo, delay, whatever and try it all out. When I get money, I'm gona try this out also. I think boss has god qualety.

also today i heard someone using a pitch shifter/harmonizer, i think that chuck schuldiner used this and it sounds like it would be really good for playing solos. any one have any settings or any tips/experience with a pitch shifter/harmonizer?

I think zoom do some singular effects, try some of them, including wah, distortion, tremelo, and like other metal sounds, just program them

well... if you're too poor for a multi-fx pedal, a harmonizer's in about the same league. It would also depend on how much you would use it (I would image not a whole lot).
IMO, if you want more control over your tone, go for an equalizer, then later go for the harmonizer.
