alexi is pretty cool at playing, but his whole attitude is kinda getting over done. first he shoots down petrucci saying that dream theaters music isnt 'music' and stuff, and then he says petrucci is amazing.

it kinda sucks. ESP guitars dont make the EXACT same guitar that alexi has. alexi has the fin towards the High E string MUCH shorter than the other. yet the thing that ESP guitar makes, both fins are almost the same lenght. just the smaller fin is slightly shorter. but oh well, alexi's guitar kicks ass

but yeah, i gotta see CoB live atleat once.

Been a big fan of Alexi Laiho's playing for a good number of years. But have become disappointed with him because of CoB's last album. Corrupted by the "chugga chugga" style of metal.

Overall, he's a great guitarist and CoB has a lot of good songs to help improve playing. Even for those who aren't up to the point of learning to sweep, or go at rediculas speed. But they still have the crazy solo's and fillers to make it complicated for the lead guitarist. simple and nucking futs at that same time.

Same for Timo. I enjoy both. altho it's kinda the same style since Stratovarius is power metal ... and CoB's is considered extreme power metal. both very high on the melodic side.

I always liked Kalmah. I don't listen to much blatantly melodic metal anymore but these guys are fine by me. Killer guitarwork & songs.

CoB is power metal....? news to me. i thought they were soemthing closer to thrash metal when thir first couple of albums came out. and now, with their 'Are you dead yet?' album, they are touching upon heavy metal or something. or even melo-death, or melodic death metal, though they arent death either...

i wont call em power coz unlike Dragonforce, or luca turulii, or rhapsodomy, they dont sing about dragons and other stuff you can make pizza with.

Alexi is one badass guitarist. I love his style esp his classical melodic approach to phrasing licks and whatnot.

I've always been a big fan of Alexi's. He obviously is a very good guitarist. He has a shit load of theory and classical influence behind him (he apparently was a skilled violinist back in the day), which is something you don't always see in metal, and is something that I've always admired. Hatebreeder is full of neo-classical riffs and solos, and in fact Alexi has taken note-for-note Mozart riffs and thrown them into his music (songs like Children of Bodom, Wrath Within, and Towards Dead End are perfect examples). Alexi and Roope Latvala also did that guitar demonstration of a movement in Vivaldi's "Summer", which also showcases his techincal ability and classical influence.

His music, today, is watered down heavy metal, and I think he is trying to appeal to a wider audience in an attempt to sell more records. I don't take it against him, but I'm definitely not buying another COB album.

i'm not sure, but they did a cover of 'fear of the dark'(original by maiden ) and near the begining of the song, instead of the guitars, there is a violin. that could have been done by their key board, or alexi playing a violin. i'm not sure, i just heard it a few times, and thought that that was really cool

although, it makes you wonder. he supposedly dropped out of violin before he picked up a guitar. and going back to a violin is not as easy.

First off, WRONG! Completely WRONG. Sorry, but that was definitely Cradle of Filth. Just to clear things up, CoB have only covered Aces High as far as Iron Maiden songs go.

Alexi is also very Bach inspired. Something Wild has a few classical pieces in it. For example, Red Light in My Eyes Part I starts out with Bach's Invention Number 13, and Red Light in My Eyes Part II starts out with Mozart's 25th. If you listen in about half a minute later, they also bring in a piece from the movement Confutatis from Mozart's Requiem Mass in D Minor.

As far as Timo, he's fuckin' excellent. I'm quite surprised that not too many people are familiar with Stratovarius. Had it not been for them, melodic metal would still only be a dream. Bands such as Nightwish and Children of Bodom still label Stratovarius as their number 1 inspiration. Listen to Know the Difference, then listen to Warmen's Unknown Soldier. You can hear how much of an impact Stratovarius has made on Janne Wirmin. Hell, it's thanks to Stratovarius that Janne has the keyboard patch that he uses today.

James Malone from the technical death metal band Arsis was a violin student too, and he's a huge neoclassical and progressive guitar nut. I enjoy his playing and his music a lot more than CoB.

So I had never heard Graveworm until today. I must say that you are correct. Though their vocals are VERY similar in my opinion. I can somewhat see as to why people thought it was Cradle of Filth. So I guess Cradle has only done one Iron Maiden cover: Hallowed be Thy Name.

What bothers the hell out of me is when people say that Children of Bodom covered Europe. It was Norther who did the Final Countdown.

supposedly graveworm is not a black metal band, but an 'extreme gothic metal band'. and supposedly the first time they played the maiden cover was on a tour with cradle of filth. i guess some drunk person heard that thought taht it was CoF instead of gravworm, and there you go.

and they seem to have gotten some really good reviews here:
http://metalstorm.ee/bands/discogra...dname=Graveworm

kinda getting bored of gothic metal, but i might as well dip my head in it once more.

Arsis & James Malone are awesome, but they're not Finnish so in this thread they don't count... kidding. Still I'd rather listen to Arsis or other "progressive nut meets death metal" bands like Pitbulls In The Nursery than CoB anyday.

CoB are quite cool, ive seen them live before and they did a pretty good show, got the crowd going. i think alexi is pretty good but he doesnt match alot of other guitarists, hes pretty average realy, as for the music i think he writes some pretty good stuff, but as someone else said, the keyboards just make me feel sick......

I kinda like the keyboards. But that's just me. I think it adds a "mystic" element to the music IMO.

Looks like you and I are the only two who enjoy Janne's keyboards. Though I do prefer Norther's synth patches much more, I prefer Janne's playing over a majority of keyboardists.
