Influences
For those of you that play bass, who do you think your influences in playing are? Name off bands, players, or preferably both...
I'd say my biggest influence is Geezer Butler from Black Sabbath. As soon as I heard Sabbath I knew I wanted to play, and have been ever since. Cliff Burton from Metallica also influenced me greatly, because he put some really beautiful interludes and such into songs such as Orion, and Anasthesia is still one of my favorite solos.

Favoryt's (best friend+we play in many common bands) biggest influence is none else than...
Adi Vines
I understand him, he is truly the king of bass, he could play alien fast, and it sounded still mellow. (see: Swervedriver)

I listened to Flea a lot which got me interested. But I was more influenced (in my playing style) by Rob DeLeo from STP and Chris Squire from Yes. I also enjoy playing bass from Ben Shepard (Soundgarden).

I started playing bass after I heard Come as you are from Nirvana. I know it's strange but hey. I'm not a big fan of Nirvana but that song made me decide to play bass. Later I was influenced by Cliff Burton, Flea and Ben shepard from Soundgarden. I played in a Punk band a long time and then I was influenced by the guy of Rancid. Now I play in a nu-metal band. I play like Fieldy and sometimes a bit like the guy from Rancid but more hardcore then off course.

Yeah, I've heard the guy from Rancid quite a bit...I downloaded a few of their songs just to see how he could play, and the guy's pretty damn good, to say the least.

my influences are
first Chris Novoselic, now - Tom Araya(his riffs are sooo good and he sings at the same time, it's fucking impossible). The CoF bass player is also pretty cool - he's one of the rare finger-metal-players.

my plaing style is mostly hardcore/metalcore.
biggest influences on me where cliff and chi cheng (deftones) don't know why but somehow I make up riffs that keep sounding like one of them guys.
For my musiclessons I have to play a lot of RHCP, like around the world etc. not my kinda music, but fun to play.
maybe you've never heard of this guy, but do you guys know Pastorus? this guy is amazing!

the only reason i got a bass was because when i was forming my band, i thought i may have had to take up the bass, cuz we had a few guitarists lined up. i suppose my only influence would be pete steele or steve harris.........

what's kind of weird about me is I don't have a ton of bass influences. Essentially I just took the guitar players stuff I really dug and used that i.e. Silenoz of Dimmu Borgir, Kurt Ballou of Converge (excellent guitar work), and the stuff bands like Burnt By the Sun, the Dillenger Escape Plan, and Deadguy all use. On of the only bands I can really say the bass playing made me stop and listen hard was Rancid. That first song off of "and out come the wolves" is excellent. Basically lots of tremelo picking and odd time structures are what have really influenced me.
Cheers,

That's about the same for me.
I played guitar for a couple of years, then i bought a bass, played for a year and a half, Then went back to guitar.
I recently started playing bass about a year ago. But i play bass similiar to the way i play guitar. With a pick.
So i'd venture to say i'm not really a good bassist.

Same also, i played the guitar for 8 years and then decided to buy a bass and start playing it. I think that because i can solo, it makes it easy to do some sweet fills so it came pretty naturally. I ended up teaching a couple guys how to play and continued with guitar.
........so my influences would be me and whatever im playing at the moment, i guess.

Peter Steele
Peter Steele was the reason for me to start playing bass. Nowadays, I don't really play like him, although I use distortion a lot. I'm trying to find my own style by playing my own music.
Other players include Tony Levin. He's great on fretless bass. Hmmm....not many more actually. Sting maybe, for his simplicity and utter effectiveness?
I don't really like the virtuoso bass players. Okay, Pastorius, Wooten and Patittucci are fenomenal players, but do I like their music? Well...a bit. They don't influence me enough, though. I listen to the music I like, not just to the bass.

Steve Harris-Iron Maiden for the way he plays Gene Simmons-KISS for the axe bass and Tom Ayra-Slayer for his Killer riffs. So I want to have an axe bass and play Ayra's riff while playing like Steve Harris

My top five are...
Jaco Pastorius-solo/Weather Report
Alex Webster-Cannibal Corpse
Jason Newsted/Cliff Burton-ex Metallica
Victor Wooten-Solo/Bela Fleck & The Flecktones
Gordon Sumner-Sting/Ex Police
and I gotta give Ryan Martinie from Mudvayne a shit load of credit for the homework he has done...that guy rips on the bass and you can't deny that.

Chubby checker's bass player first influenced me to play bass, when I sw him at epcot one time.
Then I got into more metal, and other stuff and discovered alex webster, john myung, and claypool. Also, stephan fimmers, I FUCKING GOT TO MEET HIM THE OTHER WEEK!
