The 2 bands are very good but i will go for symphony x, some may claim they are not prog, but their music contain every element of prog..

Rush is greater than most metal bands you can mention. It's just about as bad as someone saying "Black Sabbath sucks". It's a no-go.

Heard just one song of Rush, but i didn't like it. So my vote goes to DT.

Pain of salvation is good, too. But since i saw them live with this jump-like-a-ball-from-one-corner-to-another-guitarist, i don't like them that much. He was so hilarious.

Progressive Properties
----------------------

To begin, I will list and define some of the general
characteristics of progressive music.

1) Longer songs
2) Time changes
3) More complex instrumentation/Superior vocals
4) More complex ideas/Lyrical content

1) Generally speaking, prog bands have a tendency to create
very long (epic) songs. Often these songs will be broken up
into parts, but usually not divided into separate tracks on the
cd itself; kinda like sub-albums. On average most songs by prog
bands are somewhere between 5 - 10 min long. The extreme cases
as mentioned before are sometimes 20+ min long.

2) One element that can dub a band or song "progressive" is
the time change or odd-beat characteristic. I'm not going
to pretend to know everything about this, but there is a
noticeable difference between the structure of songs with
really common beats (like 4/4) and those that use diverse beats
or switch between diverse beats. Many prog bands have very
talented drummers and are able to put it all together very
nicely. Yet, at first, many (myself included) may find
certain bands or albums hard to "get into." This usually
stems from songs with odd beats that take a little work to
follow along with. Within a few listens, though, it usually
clicks.

3) The instrumentation is another element that will separate
ordinary rock/metal from *progressive* rock/metal. Commonly,
one will find strings (violins, cellos, etc), keyboard, synth,
piano, flute, etc, mixed in with the guitars and drums typically
found in rock and metal to produce the "progressive" sound. This
powerful and beautiful mix of rock and symphonic elements was my
initial draw to prog. There is a certain higher standard of talent set by
many progressive artists. Many of the musicians are considered
virtuosos, with both passion and wonderful technical ability.
Basically, progressive music will tend to have a more classical
influence than would your typical, blues-based rock music.
There is NO three-chord song in the world of prog.
Another aspect of prog is the incredible range and singing
ability of the vocalists. Multi-part vocal counter-melodies and
other layered vocal arrangements and choirs are also sometimes
used.


4) For the most part, prog bands seem to undertake massive
projects in developing ideas in their songs and albums. Some of their
lyrics are fantasy based, some are pure original fiction, and some
deal with heartfelt human emotion. Yet, no matter what the case,
like true poets usually these ideas are not blatantly brought out
to the forefront. Instead they are set back - not really hidden,
but not always completely obvious, either - waiting to be
discovered (and duly interpreted) by the listener.
A somewhat common element of progressive music is the concept
album (or rock-opera), which is basically a storyline or theme-based
work in which the individual songs on an album all relate to each
other to develop a story or describe some event or emotion, etc.

I hate black sabbaths music too. I cant stand it at all. Just as you may say Nightwish sucks, however they are more popular than many metal bands discussed here.

You can't just come and say a band sucks, especially Rush. They have Neil Peart, which is considered to be one of the greatest drummers of all time. They also have Geddy Lee who is a great singer and a force to wreckon with on bass. So that being said, they can't suck.

Heh, bullshit. I'll never say that Dream Theater doesn't suck, I don't care about their talent. Same thing with Rush. A band sucking has nothign to do with talent as far as I'm concerned. Look at Yngwie Malmsteen, he's one of the most talented guitarists there are, I'll still say he sucks, because I don't like his music.

Look, how many people here would say Limp Bizcuit sucks? I know I would. They have sold millions of albums, but I still will say they suck. Now, lets not get into a huge discussion of "Well LB has no talent, Rush does......."

I dont care if Rush has every great rock musician in its line up. I think their music is horrible. It sucks completely. I hate the vocals. I hate everything about it.

See, I dont hold classic guitarists in high regard. I dont care how fast Yngwie can solo. I would rather get a chance to meet Tuomas Holopainen, then to meet every person who has ever played in Rush.

To keep with the thread, I still hate DT except two songs, and Geddy Lee's voice ruined Rush for me.

Yeah, I agree the fanbase is fucking huge. I'll never forget when I saw them on their last tour. When they went into Tom Sawyer the crowd went fucking nuts. The highlight of the night for me would have to of been when they played "One Little Victory" from their new album.....it was fucking awesome.

And, once again, 95% of the world's population could love Rush and I will STILL say that they totally suck. Why would you say to respect a band because of their fan base? When has anyone on this forum actually done that?

Any band that I am a fan of, no matter how small the fan base is, I would respect more than Rush. To me, Rush is the epitome of shitty prog/classic rock music.

In my opinion Rush sucks. That is my opinion of Rush as my opinion was given by posting this message. My opinion, which stated that Rush sucks, is given as a statement of my opinion towards the band. To quote me, in saying that "Rush sucks", it is stating that the band of Rush, does, in the opinion of me, suck, in my opinion.
