If it's used from time to time it doesn't bother me.....
Listen to Motorhead, that's fucking cool distorted bass.
But if they're going to be using distortion so they stand out more and so it'll function more like another guitar, then they're a poor excuse for a bassist and should be sodomized with an 18 wheeler.

Ahhhh, cool. There's again some life in the best froum.
I like distorted bass when it's used the right way. And not this brutal distortion. Just some distortion from a tube. That's cool.
But mainly it should be clean.

hm, yeah Distortion, in a good way.
don't use it too much, it'll ruine the effect..
I have a Boss ODB-3, and I use it sometimes, it owns.

Yeah i use distortion the odd time, like in some songs, like metallica for example, anesthesia pulling teeth, i played that with my bass through a distortion pedal, some people didnt think it sounded ok, thats probably cos theyre not into the rock'n'roll scene, but yeah i use it the odd time, 2-4% of the time in my bass playing
and about 96-98% clean, with wah-wah

it depends on the song for distortion, but definetly tatter3d, i use distortion for anesthesia to, and it sounds great.
but on another note some bassist's do overuse the distortion and it sounds like crap, clean is the way to go unless it fits the song

I like it when its used sparingly and properly (eg. CC) but I really love the sound of a clean bass popping away, like in the Australian band omnium Gatherum, it really makes everything a hell of alot better

Doing a solo under the 12th fret with distortion is sweet, do like fast triplet fills speeding across the neck, and crank the dist in it sounds lush!

Occasionally, Lemmy, Cliff, Alex Webster, and the In Flames guy use it well.
Octave distortion is crushingly heavy, especially in D tuning.

Yeah, at the start of gigs, when we step onstage ive decided to do a sort of warm up, distorted solo like, below the 12th fret, just like licking away, at the high notes, cos its sounds lush, but i never use it any songs i play, our bands songs, because, well were punk, hehe, and bass distortion in punk is only good in The Decline.

I used to use distortion on my old crappy 4 string Ibanez because it actually sounded decent. The overall sound of it undistorted was so shitty that the distortion made is sound pretty good. But now that I've got my 6 string I don't ever touch my distortion pedal. The bass is kinda like a jazz one that sounds awesome detuned and undistorted but when I put distortion on it doesn't sound heavy at all. So I guess it all depends on the instrument and style played...the guy from 18 Visions uses distortion and it sounds damn good, though.
Cheers,

Agreed, they bass sound rules also the guys from The Spirit That Guides Us, Selfmindead and Benea Beach use distortion all the time and they have got a great sound.
its just a matter of how you use it. I use distortion too but not too much, I like my original sound better, I guess.

Hmmm, never use distortion that much apart from some distorted effects on solos. I use the effects on my digitech bp200, gets a sweet distorted sound.

Yeah everyone is saying that ibanez's sound decent with distortion cranked into them, is that with the whole bass range of ibanez, because of the tone?
Cheers

I don't like bass with distortion too much, but I guess it depends on the song. I do however like a little overdrive in bass, it gives it a good sound, not like an untuned guitar.
I think Korn is one of the shittiest bands I've ever heard but their bassist has a nice sound, do they use distortion?
